Evoked trigeminal nerve potential in chronic trichloroethylene intoxication.

Results of a study of trigeminal nerve impairment resulting from trichloroethylene intoxication by the somatosensory-evoked potential method reveal three kinds of abnormalities: increased stimulation voltage, excessive latency delay with morphological abnormalities, and excessive graph amplitude. These abnormalities confirm clinical disturbance (hypesthesia of the trigeminal nerve area) and open debate about the real mechanism of trichloroethylene neurotoxicity. Industrial intoxication by solvents, particularly trichloroethylene, is common. We have conducted a study of 188 workers chronically exposed to trichloroethylene and have confirmed the selective neurological disturbances of this intoxication in the trigeminal nerve (20%) [3, 10]. We utilized a new experimental method, developed for studies of chronic intoxications effecting the median nerve [5, 8], of recording the somatosensory evoked potential following stimulation of the trigeminal nerve [4, 6, 7]. The workers in this study were selected following clinical evaluation of their facial sensitivity and trigeminal nerve reflexes. In this paper we present our preliminary results on 11 workers, 9 suffering effects of intoxication and 2 controls.

[Value of the study of trigeminal nerve evoked potentials in chronic trichloroethylene poisoning. Preliminary results].

Results of a study concerning the trigeminal nerve impairment as the one caused by trichlorethylene chronic intoxication by somatosensory evoked potential reveal three kinds of anomalies: increase of the stimulation voltage, excessive latency delay with morphological anomalies and excessive graph amplitude. These anomalies confirm clinical disturbance (hypoesthesia in the trigeminal area) and open a debate about the real mechanism of the trichlorethylene neurotoxicity.

Cyanide and its relationship to nervous suffering. Physiopathological aspects of intoxication.

On the basis of personal results in man and laboratory animal, we examined some aspects of acute and chronic cyanide intoxication: physiopathological aspects, hydroxocobalamin's therapeutic action in treating acute intoxications and neurotoxic sufferings due to cyanide, and hydroxocobalamin's biological action in decreasing the level of free cyanide appearing in blood and urine, a few days after sciatic nerve clamping in rabbits.

[Induction of sister chromatide exchange by trichloroethylene and its metabolites (author's transl)].

The mutagenecity of trichloroethylene and its metabolites (trichloroethanol and chloral hydrate) have been tested by using the method of sister chromatide exchanges (SCE). We have found the increasing SCE in workers chronically exposed to trichloroethylene. The increasing of SCE was also observed when the human lymphocytes were exposed to trichloroethanol and chloral hydrate in vitro in certain concentrations. The all results of tests groups are compared with those of the control groups and the difference is statistically significant.

[Identification of the mineral constituents of various salivary calculi by study of their thermal behavior].

Studies of the physicochemical nature of five salivary calculi have shown that they are practically similar. They are composed of a nucleus and a shell which contain an organic phase and two crystalline mineral phases. These two phases are respectively a whitlockite and an apatite: the composition of the last agrees with the general formula: Ca10-(x+y) (PO4) T-(x+y) (CO3) x (HPO4) y (20H,CO3) (Formula: see text). The shell is different from the nucleus by the fact that it is less mineralized than the nucleus. The apatite of the shell contains more carbonate ions than the apatite of the nucleus.

Routine identification and determination of 11 barbiturates in biological samples.

A very easy, reliable and specific gas-chromatographic method for identification and dosage of 11 barbiturates in plasma is presented. Methylene unit values determined on two types of column (one polar, one non-polar) allows very accurate identification with a minimum risk of error due to fluctuations in operating conditions. Sensitivity of the method is 0.5 microgram/ml plasma with a flame ionization detector. Derivatization procedure is complete, without any degradation phenomenon as tested by mass spectrometry. Such a method can be easily used as routine procedure for toxicological or pharmacological applications.

[Perineo-transano-abdominal resection of the rectum (author's transl)].

The operative procedure described by the author, is a combined perineal and abdominal procedure for resection of the rectum. The first step is a perineal approach: patient placed in lithotomy position. The rectum is dissected free of the sphincter ani muscle. The second step perineal and abdominal: patient being placed in a semilithotomy position draped for work in the abdomen and at the same time, in perineum: the sigmoid brought down preferably if it found free of any pathology. On 18 cases of cancer, of the rectum, even some of large volume: when the inferior limit of the lesion was from 6 to 12 mc, above the anus, this procedure was carried on with good post-operative results.
