The 3'-terminal nucleosides of the high molecular weight RNA of avian myeloblastosis virus.

The RNA isolated from avian myeloblastosis virus was fractionated by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The 3'-OH terminal nucleosides of various fractions were determined by periodate oxidation followed by tritiated borohydride reduction. The 60-70S fraction and the 35S RNA derived from it by heating both have adenosine as the major terminal nucleoside, with cytidine as the next most frequent terminal. Control samples of tRNA(met) (f. coli) and 28S ribosomal RNA from mouse ascites tumor cells gave the expected terminal residues and molecular weights.

Some observations on the near ultraviolet circular dichroism of tRNA from E. coli.

The circular dichroism arising from 4-thiouridine residues in E. coli transfer RNA has been studied under conditions in which the secondary and tertiary structure of the macromolecule is either intact or totally disrupted. Studies on both unfractionated tRNA and on highly purified species of methionine-, valine-, and lysine-specific tRNA suggest that the circular dichroism of the 4-thiouridine residue is highly sensitive to its local environment in the macro-molecule and reveal interesting differences between these purified species. A new chromophore, resembling 4-thiouridine in some respects but showing distinctive chemical and optical properties, has been detected. The implications of these results on model-building studies of tRNA are discussed.

Some optical properties of diadenosine-5'-phosphates.

The absorption spectra, optical rotatory dispersion, and circular dichroism of a series of diadenosine-5'-phosphates, differing in the length of the phosphate bridge, indicate that in this set of compounds the adenine residues form an intramolecular stacked conformation. The differences in the optical properties suggest that this arrangement is different from that deduced by others for diadenosine-3',5'-monophosphate (ApA(3',5')) but is of comparable stability.

Benign and malignant breast disease: the relationship between women's health status and health values.

The study purpose was to determine whether differences in the weights assigned to various dimensions of health by 90 women in three subgroups (benign breast disease, breast cancer receiving chemotherapy, and breast cancer receiving other therapies) were associated with differences in self-reported health status in these dimensions. Two methods, one direct and the other indirect, were used to elicit values for mobility, depression, and social support. Two different scales also provided self-reports of health status in each of these dimensions. These measures, in conjunction with sociodemographic variables, were used to test for status-value relationships. No statistically significant association between health values and health status was observed. The absence of any detectable association may have been a result of methodologic difficulties in assessing broadly defined dimensions of health. A possible solution would be to use "individualized" dimensions that are uniquely important to the individual, and to take into account such factors as possible influences of past health status and values, and possible gaps between expected health status and health status actually experienced.
