[Fetomaternal therapeutic follow-up of spiramycin during pregnancy].

In the preventive treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis it is admitted that spiramycin is concentrated in the placenta and crosses the placental barrier at the end of pregnancy. However, little is known about its entry in the fetal circulation. We studied fetal spiramycin blood levels during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy in women who, having presented with toxoplasmosis during the 1st trimester, had been given spiramycin until delivery. Microbiological titrations of spiramycin were performed--in the maternal blood at the onset of treatment, at the time of fetal blood sampling and during delivery), in the fetal blood at the time of prenatal diagnosis of toxoplasmosis, in cord blood and placenta at birth. We were able to confirm transplacental crossing of spiramycin. Fetal blood levels during the 2nd trimester were about 47% of the maternal ones and there was no correlation between maternal and fetal levels. Levels at birth showed that (1) there was no accumulation in the course of treatment, (2) spiramycin was concentrated in placenta and (3) there was a correlation between fetal and maternal levels during the 3rd trimester.

Experimental urinary tract infection in rabbits by a group D Streptococcus sp.: a study of serum immunoglobulin classes by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

After induction of pyelonephritis and cystitis in rabbits by a group D streptococcus, the authors measured the specific serum antibody response in the three major immunoglobulin classes. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed using group D streptococcal antigen extracted by phenol. Before experimentation, all rabbits had low IgM, IgG and IgA titres against group D streptococcal antigen. A marked increase in IgM antibodies was detected during the first month of experimental pyelonephritis. A poor IgM antibody response was observed in rabbits with cystitis. During the three months of experimentation, a significant difference in mean IgG levels was observed between rabbits with pyelonephritis and those with cystitis.

Experimental retrograde pyelonephritis due to group D streptococcus in the rabbit: pathologic, bacteriologic and antibody-coated bacteria studies.

An experimental model of retrograde pyelonephritis in the rabbit using streptococcus D is described. The pathological findings were those of chronic pyelonephritis. The results of the antibody-coated bacteria test (ACB test) were usually negative at the end of follow-up time. Confirming previous results in streptococcus D urinary infection in the child, this experimental model shows that the ACB test is not reliable in urinary infections due to streptococcus D.
