Visual evoked potentials in schizophrenia. Intensity effects and hemispheric asymmetry.

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different flash intensities were recorded at a central site (Cz) plus at homologous temporal and occipital locations in normal and unmedicated schizophrenic subjects. Schizophrenic patients showed an hemisphere asymmetry of the P100-N120 peak-trough amplitude with smaller left but larger right hemisphere amplitudes than normal. Further, two subgroups of patients were found with abnormalities lateralized to the left hemisphere. One group was found to have abnormal P100 amplitude-intensity patterns at the left temporal site while the other group showed deviant N120 amplitude-intensity patterns at the left occipital location. The clinical significance of these results can be seen in the higher nuclear schizophrenia (PSE-CATEGO) scores in the left temporal subgroup and the higher hypomania and situational anxiety scores in the left occipital group. Patients also showed slower than normal P100 and N120 peak latencies.

The biomechanical behavior of healing canine radii and ribs.

An experimental study and accompanying theoretical study of the biomechanics of healing canine ribs and radii have been conducted. Biomechanical behavior of the healing bones was determined experimentally by whole bone structural tests in four point bending. The experimental results indicated that the non-weight-bearing ribs regained bending stiffness more rapidly than bending stiffness, while the weight-bearing radii regained bending stiffness more rapidly than bending strength. These differences were not found to correlate with differences in overall callus biochemistry, but physical examinations of the bone suggested that differences in callus morphological details between the two bone types might offer an explanation. Utilizing a theoretical model, a parameter study of the influence of callus geometry and morphology on bending behavior was conducted. The results of the parameter study demonstrate that the experimentally observed variations in the amount and distribution of callus materials and in bone geometry can produce the qualitative biomechanical differences measured experimentally. The results of the parameter study also demonstrate that bending stiffness must be used with caution as a healing criterion since it does not necessarily reflect structural strength.

Migraine patients exhibit abnormalities in the visual evoked potential.

An experiment is described which compared visual evoked potential (VEP) amplitudes and latencies in normal subjects and migraine patients. Several VEP abnormalities were found: at vertex and to a lesser extent at temporal sites, P100-N120 amplitudes were larger in patients; at vertex and temporal sites N120 amplitudes were larger in patients; at temporal sites patents had larger N120-P200 amplitudes but smaller P100 amplitudes. Peak latencies of the VEP were also found to be abnormal in patients. At vertex, patients had delayed N120 peak latencies while at temporal sites delays were found in the P200 latencies. Patients were subdivided according to side of headache. Right-sided headache patients showed larger temporal P100 amplitudes and larger left temporal P100-N120 amplitudes than bilateral headache patients.
