[Pulmonary embolism, an unrecognized risk of post-traumatic arterio-venous fistulae of the hepatic veins (1 case)].

A stab wound of the right lobe of the liver, initially treated by suture, led to the development of a large arterio-venous fistula with hemobilia. Re-operation on the 23rd day in order to carry out right hepatectomy, was rapidly followed by a massive and recurrent pulmonary embolism. A Trendelenburg operation associated with right hepatectomy did not prevent the patient's death. This risk of pulmonary embolism during post-traumatic hematoma of the liver is not fully recognised and the authors suggest, in cases of arterio-venous fistula of the hepatic veins, primary vascular exclusion of the supra-hepatic vena cava.

Ultrastructural midgut events in Culicidae larvae fed with Bacillus sphaericus 2297 spore/crystal complex.

Ingestion of Bacillus sphaericus 2297 spore/crystal complex by Culicidae larvae Anopheles stephensi, Culex pipiens subsp. pipiens and Aedes aegypti was rapidly followed by a dissolution of the protein crystalline inclusions inside the anterior stomach of the three species. During the first day of intoxication, B. sphaericus spores germinated within the midgut lumen, and were in a vegetative stage between 36-48 h after ingestion when the larvae began to die. Ultrastructural observations focused on larval midgut showed alterations which differed according to the mosquito species, being localized mainly in the gastric caeca and posterior stomach. With the bacterial concentration used, neither general cell swelling nor complete breakdown of the midgut epithelium was recorded before larval death. In A. stephensi larval midgut epithelium large low-electron-density areas appeared, rough endoplasmic reticula formed numerous concentrical structures and mitochondria swelled. Large vacuoles (of unknown origin) appeared early on in the C. pipiens midgut cells, and rough endoplasmic reticula broke into small vesicles. Midgut epithelial cells of A. aegypti showed mitochondria swelling except in the anterior stomach, and a vacuolisation of smooth reticula: these aspects remained unchanged until the larvae died.

Bacillus sphaericus asporogenous mutants: morphology, protein pattern and larvicidal activity.

Asporogenous mutants from Bacillus sphaericus strains 2297 and 1593-4, blocked at different stages of the sporulation process, were isolated. Two mutants (2297 Aspo30A and 2297 Aspo34) which were blocked early in sporulation did not possess any crystalline inclusions and were poorly toxic to Culex pipiens mosquito larvae. Other mutants (2297 Aspo115, 2297 Aspo24 and 1593-4 Aspo12) which were blocked at later stages synthesized crystal-like inclusions next to the forespores, and were highly toxic to mosquito larvae. Electrophoretic protein analysis of alkali extracts from mutants and wild type strains confirmed the absence of toxic crystal-related proteins in early-blocked mutants and their presence in later ones. Western blots with antisera directed against the crystal proteins confirmed those observations.

Another Bacillus sphaericus serotype harbouring strains very toxic to mosquito larvae: serotype H6.

Ten isolates of Bacillus sphaericus from Ghana, very toxic to mosquito larvae, have been identified as belonging to serotype H6. These isolates can be represented by the head-group strain IAB59. They form crystals at the sporulation stage. Their larvicidal effect on Culex pipiens and Anopheles stephensi larvae is as high as that of the most toxic strains already known, e.g. 1593 and 2362 (serotype H5a,5b) and 2297 (serotype H25). Spore-crystal extracts of all these strains contain a 43-Kd polypeptide immunologically related to the 43-Kd polypeptide from strain 2362 described by other authors.

Clostridium bifermentans serovar malaysia: sporulation, biogenesis of inclusion bodies and larvicidal effect on mosquito.

Sporulation of Clostridium bifermentans serovar malaysia, which has a larvicidal activity towards mosquitoes, was examined by electron microscopy. Parasporal inclusion bodies lacking a crystalline structure were first detected at t5 (5 h after the end of exponentional growth). Also, the presence of "brush-bottle"-like appendages appearing first at t5 was noted; these remained attached to the spores when released after sporangium lysis. Larvicidal activity assayed on Anopheles stephensi larvae appeared at t0 and increased rapidly to a maximum between t5 and t8. However, a decrease in bacterial toxicity occurred with sporangium lysis.

Recycling of Bacillus sphaericus 2362 in mosquito larvae: a laboratory study.

After ingestion by Culex pipiens and Anopheles stephensi fourth instar larvae, spores of Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362 rapidly germinated inside live mosquito midgut. Bacterial counts and electron microscopic observations on intoxicated larvae revealed that the number of viable spores rapidly decreased during the first 12 h, with a minimum between 12 and 24 h. In cadavers, the number of heat-resistant spores quickly increased between the first and second day post-feeding. After one week, the number of spores inside dead larvae reached approximately 20 times the number of ingested spores for both mosquito species (ca. 4 X 10(5) spores/larva). Ultrathin sections of recycled spores showed the presence of a crystalline inclusion identical to that initially present in spores before ingestion. Bioassay on C. pipiens fourth instar larvae showed a similar toxicity between in vivo recycled spores (LC50 = 1.1 +/- 0.3 X 10(5) spores/ml after 24-h exposure) and culture-medium-grown spores of B. sphaericus strain 2362 (LC50 = 1.7 +/- 0.4 X 10(5) spores/ml).

[Annular pancreas. Apropos of 4 cases].

Annular pancreas is a rare congenital anomaly cause of duodenal obstruction. Associated ulcus is frequent. Chronic pancreatitis complicating annular pancreas can lead to resection. Among 4 observations, evolution and treatment are presented. Treatment requires derivation or resection of the stenosis.

[Study of the larvicidal activity of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis on Toxorhynchitinae larvae (author's transl)].

Toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, H 14 serotype, has been tested on larvae of Toxorhynchites amboinensis, predaceous larvae of other Culicinae larvae. The Toxorhynchites larvae are not sensitive to the bacterial toxin up to relatively high dosages, except when larvae of Aedes aegypti are provided in the suspension. Mode of action of the crystal appears to be similar to the one observed in the epithelial cells of intoxicated Aedes aegypti larvae midgut.

[Immune evaluation in oncologic surgery].

Immunity-linked cells include the lymphocytes and phagocytes. The former can be counted by the rosette techniques or by monoclonal antibodies, while for the latter their function is determined mainly. Good correction has been demonstrated, for example, between the number of so-called E active rosettes and both tumor extension and patient survival. The surgical act itself exaggerates the satellite anomalies of the cancer, but in any case it is followed by immunotherapy which justifies a second application of immunologic techniques.
