A case of spontaneous regression of the tumor type of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MDK) is reported. This case is consistent with recent data on the natural history of MDK. The classical therapeutic approach which involves surgery is discussed in the context of this case and of others with a similar course.
A questionnaire survey was carried out in a public maternity hospital among 350 mothers who had just given birth, in order to study factors possibly influencing their choice between breast feeding and bottle feeding. The high rate of questionnaire response (96%) indicated that mothers were much concerned by this choice. According to the feeding method initially chosen (breast, mixed, bottle feeding) 3 groups of mothers were distinguished and were compared by chi 2 analysis. The results showed specific characteristics within each group, such as the definite nature of the decision regarding bottle feeding, and trend-indicators for the choice of feeding, such as the events during pregnancy and delivery, parity, standard of education, reaction to separation from the baby at birth and the number of birth-preparation courses followed. Relatives and the medical team appeared to have no influence on mother's decisions and interest in freedom of choice remained constant. These results are indicative in determining actions for the promotion of breast-feeding, some of which have been proposed in this study.
From 41 reviewed cases and 2 personal observations of the WAGR syndrome, the main symptoms and their relative frequency are described: aniridia, mental retardation, Wilms' tumor. Sexual anomalies and gonadoblastoma are less frequent. The chromosomic micro-deletion can be shown by using highly sophisticated cytogenetic techniques, or suspected by blood enzymatic dosage (mainly catalase). Kidney echographic follow-up is highly recommended.
In a retrospective study of 83 preterm newborns of 32 weeks of gestation or less, isolated periventricular leukomalacia was found in 7 cases (8.4%). Ultrasonographic diagnosis was made in all cases during the first 3 days of life and cystic lesions always occurred during the first 40 days. Five of the 7 newborns suffered from in utero asphyxia, 4 had an Apgar score below 5 at 5 min, and only 4 presented a respiratory distress syndrome. Thus the diagnosis of periventricular leukomalacia can be established early by ultrasonography. In utero asphyxia seems to be a critical determinant of ischaemic brain lesions.
Twenty-six cases of neonatal torsion of spermatic cord were studied and compared to 171 cases reported in the literature. In a few cases, the torsion was antenatal and this may explain some absent testes. Diagnosis is sometimes difficult to make; symptoms were comparable to those in other disorders: peritoneo-vaginal tunnel, testicular inflammation or testicular tumor. In these cases, surgery can make the exact diagnosis although it cannot save the testis even if it is performed early.

Between 1981 and 1983, 251 premature infants with a birth weight of less than 1 500 grams were admitted to the Neonatal Pathology Unit of the E. Herriot hospital (malformations excluded). Forty two (17%) died during the neonatal period. These premature births resulted essentially from pathological pregnancies: multiple pregnancies (1/5 cases), renal pathology (1/3 cases), placental abnormalities (10%) and fetoplacental infections (10%). In half of all cases delivery was by cesarian section, indicated in 85% of cases because of acute or chronic fetal distress. These premature infants suffered from respiratory (including 40% hyaline membrane disease), neurological (abnormal cerebral echotomography with dilatation or intracranial haemorrhage in 35% of cases), infectious (6%) and digestive (6% necrosing enterocolitis) pathology. Of the 208 surviving children, 12 (i.e. 6% of the survivors) had major sequelae (with follow-up of one year or more).
The authors report a case of an infant born after a 37-week intra-tubal pregnancy (foeto-salpinx). There were several orthopaedic complications due to malposition: torticollis which will be treated by sternomastoid tenotomy at the age of three, pes valgus with metatarsus varus and congenital dislocation of the right hip. Conservative treatment proved inadequate and required treatment by pelvic osteotomy to correct a severe acetabular dysplasia. A review of the literature reveals that tubal pregnancies resulting in the birth of a mature and living new born are exceptional. From the mechanical point of view, the authors consider that, in this case, two factors combined to produce a congenital dislocation of the hip--excessive pressure exerted on the foetus by the tubal wall and an abnormal position of the foetus favouring the dislocation. The reasons for the ineffectiveness of conservative treatment to correct the severe acetabular dysplasia are discussed.
The medium chain acyl-CoA deshydrogenase defect: a new inherited metabolic disorder. This enzymatic defect blocks the catabolism of non esterified fatty acids during fasting. Thus, this disease is revealed by a coma due to hypoglycemia in a young child; the presence of dicarboxylic aciduria in such a situation is the main evidence for this diagnosis. Finally, the enzymatic studies performed on skin fibroblasts show a defect in medium chain acyl-CoA deshydrogenase. When a child is investigated away from a coma episode, the ketotic diet induces dicarboxylic aciduria but must be performed in an intensive care unit for its dangers.
Three children with diencephalic tumours are described. In these cases, the main clinical features are extreme emaciation and nystagmus. Ultrasonography and computed tomography demonstrated the tumour. In one case, high levels of growth hormone were observed. In the three cases, the tumour was a glioma.
In 5 full-term neonates presenting with signs of acute neonatal brain damage, intracranial hemorrhage was proven by CT-scan performed within a few days after birth. Status epilepticus occurred soon after birth as shown on EEG. Prognosis was most often very poor. These data are compared with the series reported in the literature.

We report the case of a 3 week-old black infant who presented with hemolytic anemia due to an incompatibility with his mother in the U blood group system. Jaundice, present on the 3rd day of life, was considered as physiologic jaundice. A positive Coombs test led to the discovery in the mother's serum of an immune antibody against the U public antigen.

Analytical study of treatment of information from a primary intervention by the S.A.M.U. were brought about with the aim of performing a "statistical" study of enumeration of the various possibilities, using three "standard" programmes. After exploitation of the statistical data, the card index is stocked on conventional magnetic tape and verified by different parameters permitting its identification. In addition, the concatenation of different card indices is easy to obtain, which makes it possible to carry out research into all existing file cards regardless of the month or year.
