[Mixed hyperlipoproteinemias. Importance of diet].

The interest of diet is particularly clear in mixed hyperlipemia. In fact, the authors were only able to define the type of lipid abnormality after a test diet and prolonged supervision. One should never treat mixed hyperlipemia straightaway with hypocholesterolemic agents. The authors studied 22 patients with a form only demonstrable in the laboratory. There were no clinical signs of arteriosclerosis. In the group of dyslipemic subjects with minor hyperlipemia, they obtained normal figures for serum cholesterol and triglyceride. The results remained stable after 4 months supervision.

Purification of rat adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase by affinity chromatography.

Lipoprotein lipase (EC 3.1.1.3) from rat adipose tissue was purified by affinity chromatography with heparin-Sepharose. Elution was carried out with buffered solutions of increasing NaCl molarity. Proteins without affinity for heparin were eluted with 0.5 M NaCl, while lipoprotein lipase activity was eluted as two peaks with 1.16 M NaCl (In earlier work on human adipose tissue (Etienne et al. (1974) C.R. Acad. Sc. Paris 279, 1487-1490) two fractions with lipoprotein lipase activity were also obtained). Phospholipase activity was detected in the fraction eluted with buffered 0.5 M NaCl and containing proteins without affinity for heparin. On feeding the fasting rats with fresh cream or glucose two peaks were also obtained, but the first peak had clearly increased while the second one had remained virtually unchanged.

[Indirect effect of the larval food of an alternative host (Galleria mellonella L., Lepidoptera, Galleriidae) on the reproduction of an entomophagous insect (Lixophaga distraeae Towns, Dipt. Tachinidae)].

G. mellonella reared on its natural food, beeswax and pollen, is not suitable for a continuous rearing of L. diatraeae. As a matter of fact, L. diatraeae cannot be maintained for more than 10 generations on G. mellonella because the effect of adverse factors during the larval stage progressively reduces both mating rate and female fertility. But adding vitamin E to the natural larval food of G. mellonella eliminates these reproduction disturbances of the parasite, and L. diatraeae rearing can be continued on this alternative host, the diet of which has been enriched with vitamin E.

[Subcellular localization of rat adipocyte lipoprotein lipase].

The sub-cellular localisation in rat fat cells of lipoprotein lipase is discussed in this paper. The lipoprotein lipase was found with maximum activity in the microsomal fraction. Some special features of this activity in membrane fraction are pointed out.
