[Predictive potential of a microbiological caries activity test in preschool children--2-year results].

In a clinical trial the predictive potential of a microbiological screening test for identifying patients with increased caries activity was evaluated. Within a period of 2 years microbiological data and caries increments were found to correlate well. Of the results in 113 preschool children, only 4 proved to be false negative, i.e. only 4 children were wrongly allocated to a non-risk group. As the test is easily handled, it is excellently suited both for group and individual screening programs.

Human plasma fluoride levels following intake of dentifrices containing aminefluoride or monofluorophosphate.

After single, oral doses, 8 h profiles of fluoride (F) concentrations in plasma were determined in healthy human volunteers. Bioavailability of F from four dentifrices with either aminefluoride (AMF) or monofluorophosphate (MFP) was compared with that of NaF. There were no significant differences with respect to F availabilities, plasma F peak levels and plasma F profiles between NaF and the dentifrices tested, regardless of the F compound, F content or further ingredients. From the pharmacokinetic data it is concluded that dentifrices with 0.02 per cent F or less markedly decrease the risk of inducing plasma F concentrations that might disturb enamel mineralization, even if large quantities of dentifrice are ingested by small children.

[Sugar consumption of lower Franconian peoples].

Parents, teachers and pupils altogether seem to be highly interested in the subject of the study. In addition, most of the pupils show good knowledge of the relationship between sugar consumption and the development of dental caries. Nevertheless, in spite of the above mentioned facts, 75% of the pupils prefer sweetened to non-sweetened alternatives. As there are no symptoms of a behavioural change, the hope of nutrition-guidance being an effective means of caries reduction cannot be supported--at least for the present situation in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Factors influencing the bioavailability of fluoride from calcium-rich, health-food products and CaF2 in man.

After single, oral doses, 8 h profiles of fluoride (F) concentrations in plasma were determined in healthy human volunteers. Bioavailability of F from bone-meal, calcium and CaF2 tablets was evaluated in relation to that of NaF. Tablets were administered either whole or as a finely-ground powder, either to fasting subjects or with breakfast. Availability was lowest from whole tablets taken by fasting subjects, and highest from powdered substances given with breakfast. Mean F availabilities ranged between 7.2 and 39 per cent with bone-meal tablets, between 20 and 59 per cent with Ca tablets, and between 0 and 47 per cent with CaF2 tablets.
