Understanding lesbians' mammography utilization.

Lesbians face unique barriers to health care, and may be at higher risk for breast cancer than are other women. Yet, no research on lesbians and mammography utilization exists. We conducted telephone interviews of 107 lesbians aged 51-80, of whom 68 had had mammograms in the last year and 39 had not. Responses to open-ended questions identified the barriers lesbians face in obtaining mammography, lesbians, reasons for obtaining mammograms, and factors that would help lesbians obtain mammograms. Some issues identified were particular to lesbians; many issues were common to those identified by general samples of women (which include lesbians).

In vivo characterization of glenoid with use of computed tomography.

Improvement in the treatment of the shoulder could be achieved by accurately describing the pathologic characteristics of the joint. The goal of this study was to characterize, in vivo, glenoids with 3 different diagnoses by using computed tomography (CT): rotator cuff pathology with a limited rupture and without bony changes (group A, n = 15), primary osteoarthritis (group B, n = 13), and rheumatoid arthritis (group C, n = 4). The bone density distribution was assessed by means of the CT value expressed in Hounsfield units. The version angle was also measured. The examination of the CT value showed different distributions according to the pathology. In group A, the cancellous bone presented a central area with a relatively homogeneous and low density. In group B, the reinforcement of the density along with the posterior region seemed to be correlated with the retroversion angle. In the rheumatoid arthritis group, the main characteristic was the loss of the subchondral bone margin. The cartography of the CT value was not reproducible among the 4 cases examined. These in vivo descriptions provide guidelines for the surgeon before total shoulder arthroplasty, helping preoperative planning as well as simulation of implantation.

Delayed haemolytic transfusion reactions due to anti-C.

In 5 patients of phenotype ccDEe or ccDEE, the transfusion of 2--14 U of C-positive blood was folloued 5--9 days later by haemoglobinuria lasting 2--4 days. Anti-C was the only antibody present in all 5 cases but was always of low titre; with CC cells the maximum titre recorded with the indirect antiglobulin test was 8 and with the agglutination of enzyme-treated cells, 128. The discordance between the weakness of the antibody in vivo and the amount of haemoglobin released intravascularly is surprising but may be related to the type of IgG molecule of which anti-C is composed.

Managing difficult employees.

The author describes the DISC Trait Theory Model as a means of enabling managers to improve interactions and reduce encounters with difficult employees. A basic understanding of each style (director, interactor, control, and service) is provided as well as strategies for different types of interactions.

Prevalence of Salmonella serotypes on pig carcasses from high- and low-risk herds slaughtered in three abattoirs.

The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of Salmonella serotypes at two different sites on pig carcasses from herds classified as high-risk or low-risk and to elucidate the relationship between carcass contamination levels and serological status. Caecal samples and carcass surface swabs were cultured for Salmonella from a total of 210 pigs from low risk herds (< 19% of pigs in herd Salmonella seropositive) and 209 pigs from high risk herds (> 32% of pigs in herd Salmonella seropositive) in three abattoirs. Meat juice samples were collected for analysis by ELISA. The prevalence of Salmonella in the caecal contents of "low-risk" pigs was 10%, which was significantly lower than the 19% prevalence in "high-risk" pigs (p < 0.01). The corresponding figures for skin samples collected immediately post-evisceration were 2% and 12%. The predominant Salmonella serotype in the caecal contents of both the low-risk and high-risk pigs was Salmonella Typhimurium. Salmonella Kentucky and Salmonella Derby were the most frequent isolates from the carcass surface swabs of low- and high-risk pigs respectively. There was a positive association between seropositivity of pigs from high-risk herds and caecal carriage (p < 0.05). Results showed that herd categorisation based on serological results was useful in predicting Salmonella isolation rates from caecal samples and surface swabs of slaughtered pigs.
