A double blind urographic study with the ionic contrast medium metrizoate or the non-ionic medium iohexol was performed on 69 insulin dependent diabetic patients. Metrizoate caused 24 per cent and iohexol 11 per cent mild adverse reactions and metrizoate a significant decrease in creatinine clearance values. Thus iohexol turned out to be better tolerated by these diabetic patients than metrizoate.
To investigate whether low dose ionizing radiation caused perturbation of peripheral blood lymphocytes in radiology unit staff, the T-helper/suppressor ratio was examined in eight radiologists exposed to low dose radiation over a period of 6 to 27 years (mean 12 years). No significant difference was noted in the T-cell subsets between exposed radiologists and non-exposed control subjects. The effect of low dose ionizing radiation on peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets seems to be virtually negligible. Further, measurement of the T-helper/suppressor ratio is not a reliable way of demonstrating any damage to bone marrow caused by low dose ionizing radiation.

The radiation dose from diagnostic procedures was estimated for 79 kidney transplant recipients. The mean bone marrow does was 4.8 rad, the mean gonad dose for men 16.5 rad, and for women 5.6 rad. A dose of this magnitude has no obvious immunological effect, whereas a canserogenic and a genetic effect must be taken into consideration.
