[Child development related health education--a responsibility of the public health service].

The Public Health Service is in a unique position with regard to the access to all socioeconomic groups including those who lack the alertness to make use of our health care system. This highlights it as a key factor in primary prevention. Interventions must focus on the individual situation of the addresses in order to motivate them to healthy behaviour. Health promotion for girls needs more attention, their knowledge and behaviour are decisive for the next generation.

[Female adolescence: adaptation to bodily functions].

Basic knowledge about ones own body is worthwhile for the understanding of advisable attitudes in personal hygienics. Teaching of hygienic means for the controlling of bodily functions should go hand in hand with the education in human biology. Nevertheless, the doctor who offers care for adolescent girls will always be confronted with certain typical questions about discharge and menstruation, not much later as well about reproductive function or contraception. For menstrual hygienics tampons have advantages over pads, as long as their use is properly demonstrated. The toxic-shock syndrome has hardly ever existed in association with the use of tampons.

[Personal hygiene and sex education of young girls].

Sexual education of girls and guidance for their personal hygiene are closely related. In preventive checkups as well as in the course of each and every consultation, the physician has an opportunity to discuss reproductive health issues first with the mother and then with the daughter. As far as the hygiene of the reproductive organs is concerned, the doctor will find that his initiative is necessary and useful. It contributes to the prevention of diseases and simultaneously to sexual education, because it teaches the girls that these organs are as important and worth to be taken care of as every other part of their body. The physician should provide a model in giving advice on a comfortably uninhibited, yet considerate approach to the own body and, more specifically, to reproductive health care.
