Case reports of severe lung damage in patients treated with oxygen following paraquat poisoning lead the autors to design an experiment, in which the contributory role of oxygen was tested. It was shown on rats that administration of oxygen in paraquat - intoxicated rats causes, already in the LD50/20 dosage of paraquat, death in all experimental animals during the first 24 hours. Light and electron microscopic examination revealed edema, desquamation of alveolar epithelium with cell destruction of typ I and Typ II pneumocytes and total denudation of the alveolar basement membrane. Alveolar macrophages participated in the removal of the cellular debris. The toxic substance itself was not detectable in the blood of the rats 24 hours or later after the oral application.

Various sets of horses were examined in view of the necessity of widening the range of biochemical substances for diagnostic purposes in the field of veterinary medicine. The aim of the investigations was to obtain basic information on fibrinogen level and its variability. The average value stated was 280 mg% s = 89, sx = 12, V% = 32). The fibrinogen level in horses of the pronounced oxidation type was lower than in those with reduced metabolism, the difference being connected with the speed of sedimentation of erythrocytes. Repeated examination of a part of the set of horses (n = 10) on three different days within one week under the same conditions, showed a nonsignificant difference in the variability of the investigated horses (F = 0.901); neither did the coefficient of repeatability (rop = 0.11) reach the level of the testing criterion. The results indicate variability, with normal physiological condition of the animal, in the fibrinogen level. The physiological variability in fibrinogen level can also be explained in connection with other protein fractions.
A series of eight observations serves for demonstrating the clinico-pathological picture of the benign lymphoepithelial lesion of salivary glands. The glandular lesion was associated with joint symptoms, one of the female patients developed malignant lymphoma.

Report on a case of the malignant APUDOMAP (argyrophil cell carcinoma) of the uterine cervix in a 24-years old women. The tumor appeared during the third pregnancy and fatal generalization resulted cca three month after operative delivery and panhysterectomy. Histologically argyrophil cells were proved both in the primary localization and distant metastases (liver, lymph nodes, ovaries, brain, meninges, skeleton). In the electron microscope of the bioptic specimen specific granules and microfilaments were identified in some tumour cells supporting the diagnosis of a cancer of the APUD-series. Some general features of primary cervical APUDOMAS also outlined.

Focal presence of the embryonic pattern of myoarchitecture and of a lacunary blood supply was found in the left ventricular wall of five infant hearts. Four of these hearts showed various malformations; one was a case of cardiac fibroma. The persisting intertrabecular spaces and sinusoids communicated with the ventricular lumen; there appeared to be some communication with the coronary branches. The intertrabecular spaces of the spongy myocardium were lined with a continuous layer of endothelial cells, thus resembling the microscopical appearance of myocardium of adult cold-blooded vertebrates rather than the embryonic phase of myocardial development of warm-blooded animals.
