Studies were carried out in rats on myocardial adaptation to injury produced by left coronary artery ligation. In the ischemic zone, open collaterals were present as shown by studies using the fine structural extracellular protein tracer, horseradish peroxidase (HRP). This phenomenon may explain the inhomogeneous cardiac muscle cell alteration in the early phase of coronarogenic myocardial injury. Reperfusion, as evidenced by the influx of HRP into the damaged cells, unmasked sarcolemmal membrane injury. Cardiac muscle cell stimulation modifies the binding of macromolecules to cell components and may influence the repair processes. In the surviving myocardium, correlative enzyme histochemical and ultrastructural studies demonstrated the development of alternative metabolic pathways and morphological signs of adaptation explaining increasing resistance of such cardiac muscle cells to subsequent insult.
Acute parvovirus B19 infection was confirmed in an 8-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on maintenance therapy by electron microscopy, DNA, and serological techniques. Clinical manifestations were typical of severe anemia, fever, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Increased levels of serum erythropoietin were detected in the course of the infection. The patient's recovery was supported by corticosteroids, red blood cell transfusions, G-CSF, and commercial immunoglobulin preparations.
Evidence here cited underlies resolutions at international meetings to initiate a chronobiology project for health improvement. This project demonstrates expeditiously the feasibility and the health benefits of incorporating chronomedical considerations in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of one (or a few closely related) vascular (and oncological) diseases, that have high awareness and importance in the public perspective. Thereby, chronomedicine should become a mainstream basic and applied speciality leading to continual improvement in national/international health status. Reference data obtained for health care can also serve to give a better understanding of the relationship between the terrestrial biosphere and cosmoi near and far.
