Ten-year experience with primary ocular 'reticulum cell sarcoma' (large cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma).

Fourteen patients with intraocular 'reticulum cell sarcoma' (non-Hodgkin's large cell lymphoma) ranging in age from 27 to 77 are presented. All patients had evidence of vitritis with 50% showing intraretinal and/or subretinal lesions and 21% having anterior uveitis. Five of the patients developed central nervous system lesions and subsequently died. Primary radiation therapy to the eyes and CNS appears to prevent spread of the disease and improve longevity. Chemotherapy improved survival in one patient with CNS spread of disease.

Activity of pp60c-src protein kinase in human breast cancer.

Because there is elevation of pp60c-src activity in breast carcinoma tissue, we analyzed primary breast cancer tissue samples from 30 women to determine whether pp60c-src activity correlated with specific clinical parameters. We found that tumors with a progesterone receptor had higher pp60c-src activity than tumors without such a receptor. But there was no association of pp60c-src activity with the presence of an estrogen receptor or of nodes, or with menopausal status or age. The function of pp60c-src in normal cells and in breast cancer is unknown, as is the significance of our finding of an association of elevated pp60c-src activity and the presence of progesterone receptors.

Surface expression of Gp 165/95, the complement receptor CR3, as a marker of disease activity in systemic Lupus erythematosus.

Complement-derived peptides capable of activating neutrophils appear in plasma during flares of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). One possible consequence of such activation is an increased expression of the surface adhesion promoting heterodimer gp165/95 (the complement receptor CR3). The quantity of gp165/95 was measured by indirect immunofluorescence using a monoclonal antibody of the CD11b group. Mol, directed to the alpha chain. Eighty-three percent of 26 patients with SLE expressed gp165/95 on their neutrophil surface to a greater extent than normals. The highest levels of surface gp165/95 were found in patients with the most severe disease, who also had the highest levels of the circulating anaphylatoxin C3a (mean = 560 ng/ml versus 147 ng/ml in controls). There was a negative correlation between expression of gp165/95 and absolute neutrophil count. Five individuals followed serially demonstrated an increase in surface gp165/95 during disease flares which returned to normal with clinical improvement. These data support the hypothesis that the neutrophils of patients with active SLE recruit increased numbers of gp165/95 molecules to their surface in respose to complement activation; these activated neutrophils bearing increased numbers of adhesion promoting gp165/95 may contribute to endothelial injury in SLE.

Immunochemical characterization and purification of Sm-97, a Schistosoma mansoni antigen monospecifically recognized by antibodies from mice protectively immunized with a nonliving vaccine.

Mice protected against Schistosoma mansoni infection by intradermal (i.d.) vaccination with nonliving schistosomula or soluble extracts of larval or adult schistosomes (SCHLAP and SWAP, respectively) produce antibodies that react by Western blot analysis with one antigen of Mr (X 10(-3)) 97 in SWAP prepared in the presence of protease inhibitors and two antigens of Mr (X 10(-3)) 95 and 78 in SWAP prepared in their absence. Vaccine antibodies also immunoprecipitated a single 97k molecule, with a pI of 5.5, from detergent extracts of [35S] methionine-labeled schistosomes. Three hybridomas, produced from spleen cells of i.d. immunized mice, all recognized both the 95k/78k doublet and the 97k antigen, indicating that the two lower Mr components are degradation products of the same 97k molecule. The 97k/95k/78k complex (Sm-97) was purified by affinity chromatography and found to constitute 0.5% of the total protein in SWAP. 125I-concanavalin A bound weakly to purified Sm-97, indicating that this antigen is minimally glycosylated. By indirect immunofluorescence, Sm-97 was localized to regions just below the tegumental and gut syncitia of adult worms. Mice protected by i.d. vaccination produced high titers (1:10,240) of anti-Sm-97 antibodies, whereas chronically infected mice responded at a much lower level (titer 1:640). In contrast, mice protectively immunized with irradiated cercariae and mice nonprophylactically inoculated by the i.v. route failed to produce detectable anti-Sm-97 antibodies. Competitive radioimmunoassays performed with 125I-labeled monoclonal antibodies and purified antigen defined at least two distinct epitopes on Sm-97. Antibodies from i.d. vaccinated mice recognized both monoclonal antibody-defined epitopes, whereas anti-Sm-97 antibodies in chronic infection sera recognized neither. Finally, purified Sm-97 was shown to elicit delayed-type hypersensitivity in i.d. vaccinated mice, suggesting that this molecule is also capable of evoking cell-mediated responses, a finding consistent with its proposed function as a vaccine immunogen.

Patient accounts changes to meet demands of DRGs, UB-82.

In an informal survey, patient accounts managers described the present practices taking place in their institutions regarding patient accounts management. In the areas of admitting, billing, credit and collection, and accounting and management, patient accounts managers are finding methods and techniques to respond to the changes created by DRGs and the UB-82.

Reasons for smoking cessation among a random sample of North Carolina nurses.

The purpose of this study was to assess selected correlates of successful smoking cessation among a random sample of 600 professional nurses in North Carolina. A questionnaire utilizing multiple choice and/or Likert responses was mailed to a 1% sample of all active and inactive nurses registered with the N.C. Board of Nursing. Respondents were categorized as former, current, and never smokers. Emphasis on morbidity, mortality, and decreased respiratory function appears to have had the greatest impact on smoking cessation. Approximately half indicated the pressure from family and friends to stop smoking was a reason for their smoking cessation. Recommendations for individual and institutional interventions that will contribute to smoking cessation are identified.

Cold injury caused by psychiatric illness: six case reports.

Six patients are reported in whom mental illness led to severe cold injury. The main contributory factors were cold surroundings, inactivity and neglect. The additional factor of impaired microcirculation in these patients may also be significant. In the winter of 1979 two instances of cold injury in patients with mental illness came to our attention. A search of the medical records at the Whittington Hospital revealed a further three cases over a period of 14 years. One patient was seen at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queen Square.

Violent crime and the menstrual cycle.

Of 50 women charged with crimes of violence, 44% committed their offence during the paramenstruum (P less than 0.02) and there was a significant lack of offences during the ovulatory and post-ovulatory phases of the menstrual cycle (P less than 0.01). This association could not be accounted for by psychosocial factors. Offences were unrelated to symptoms of premenstrual tension. When considering treatment, recurrent behavioural changes rather than subjective symptoms should be looked for.

Preferences for wavelength and intensity in rhesus monkeys: fact or artifact?

10 adult male rhesus monkeys were tested to determine whether systematic preferences existed for specific color or brightness of visual stimuli. In contrast with previous reports no significant preferences for either specific hues or brightness levels were found. Perhaps methodological or subject variables may be responsible for preferential responding in other situations and account for the present inability to confirm prior work on preferences for color and brightness.
