Catheter suction biopsy in diagnosis of an intrapulmonary artery tumor.

Unsuspected intracardiac masses are occasionally encountered when cardiac catheterization is performed in a patient with right ventricular or pulmonary artery occlusive disease. In one of two patients, suction biopsy of the mass has been successful in obtaining a histological diagnosis. The method and its contraindications are discussed.

Non relationship of climatologic factors and painful sickle cell anemia crisis.

Conflicting results have arisen from studies concerning the correlation (if any) between climatological changes and the frequency of painful episodes in the sickle cell population. During a 13 month period records of 71 patients with hemoglobin genotypes SS or SC were reviewed. Data analysis failed to reveal an association between the frequency of painful sickle cell crisis and a number of weather and environmental variables. We were unable to demonstrate relationships between the climatologic factors of temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide level and precipitation in the frequency of 362 pain crises in 71 sickle cell patients during a 13 month period.

Cardiac papilloma. A case report with evidence of thrombotic origin.

A pulmonic valve cardiac papilloma was found in a patient with coagulopathy and disturbed right ventricular hemodynamics. Fibrin was demonstrated within the cores of the papillae, lending further support to the thrombotic derivation of these lesions. The tumor's papillary configuration was thought to be the result of molding by the turbulent blood flow at that site.

Thrombotic occlusion of a Bjork-Shiley mitral valve.

Thrombosis of a mechanical cardiac valve is a complication potentially preventable by adequate anticoagulation. A patient is described who discontinued anticoagulant therapy, with resultant near-fatal thrombosis of a mitral Bjork-Shiley valve. The literature is reviewed concerning the incidence of thrombotic prosthetic valve occlusion in the various anatomical sites and potential factors contributing to its occurrence.
