Analgesic renal papillary necrosis.

Analgesic nephropathy is well recognised. This is a retrospective review of 19 patients with the disease, who presented at Groote Schuur Hospital over a 4-year period. The diagnosis was made on historical and clinical grounds and on the radiological manifestations of papillary necrosis. The mean age was 49 years (26 - 74) with a sex ratio of 3,8 female : 1 male. The period of abuse varied between 3 and 20 years. Aspirin, phenacetin, codeine, and antipyrine were the compounds mainly ingested. If the abuse is stopped, renal deterioration can be halted. However, factors which lead to dehydration and infection tend to cause further decompensation. As a means of preventing this disease greater control over analgescis is needed.

History of SO2 removal system at the Meramec plant of union electric.

In line with the then emerging air pollution control regulations Union Electric installed a limestone injection wet scrubber sulfur dioxide removal system on an intermediate size coal-fired utility boiler at its Meramec Power Plant on an experimental basis in September, 1968. Approximately 3 years of operation many difficulties were encountered with plugging and scaling of various system components by calcium sulphate. As a result of this experience along with related experiences by other utilities employing similar systems, the experiment was terminated in June, 1971. As a result of the experiences gained, however, second generation experiments in sulfur dioxide removal have been initiated elsewhere with the hope of improved performance. A number of experimental projects are still under tests. Costs in resources, reliability, and disposal of residual by-products are matters of great concern. The ture cost of sulfur dioxide removal systems in dollars and resources is not well known and perhaps a reevaluation of current and future SO2 removal projects is in order at this time before additional resources are committed.

Contact urticaria from cobalt chloride.

Cobalt chloride should be added to the ever growing list of contact urticants. This chemical is frequently used as a color indicator in provocative sweat testing. In this case, contact urticaria was probably nonimmunologic in origin. Since diphenhydramine and 48-80 (polymonine block this reaction to cobalt chloride, vasoactive amines are at least partially responsible for the urticaria.

Herpes simplex virus and human cytomegalovirus replication in WI-38 cells. II. An ultrastructural study of viral penetration.

An electron microscope study was carried out on the early minutes of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) penetration into WI-38 cells. Both HSV and CMV entered cells either by fusion of the viral envelope with a limiting cell membrane, or via phagocytosis. Both fusion and phagocytosis occurred within 3 min after the initiation of penetration. After fusion, the naked capsids of CMV free in the cytoplasm became coated with a fine, fibrillar material. CMV capsids thus coated retained a well-defined and easily identifiable morphology until the eclipse of visible viral particles between 1 and 1.5 days postinfection. In contrast, naked HSV capsids free in the cytoplasm were never coated. Rather, within minutes after penetration, they assumed a rounded, less regular outline, and were no longer detectable by 90 to 120 min postinfection. The free naked capsids of both viruses appeared to migrate across the cytoplasm toward the nucleus and to become located near nuclear pores. Both HSV and CMV capsids reached the nucleus as early as 5 min after the initiation of penetration. No further interaction with the nucleus could be documented. Particles were also consistently identified in the Golgi region. Phagocytosed particles generally remained within phagosomes, where they appeared to be degraded. However, stages were identified in what is believed to be the escape of enveloped viruses from phagosomes into the cytoplasm via fusion of their envelope with the phagosomal membrane.
