Lactate dehydrogenase isozymes in human cardiac transplantation.

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozyme activities have been followed in 17 human cardiac allografts. A pattern of abnormality associated with cardiac rejection during the first month after operation has been determined: (i) LDH-1 activity is greater than LDH-2 activity; (ii) LDH-1 activity is greater than 35 percent of total LDH activity; and (iii) LDH-1 activity is greater than 100 international units. The LDH-1 abnormality helps to meet the need for an index of cardiac rejection during the early weeks after operation when the electro-cardiogram is least reliable.

Stability of factors V and VIII in thawed fresh frozen plasma units.

Factors V and VIII, commonly regarded as unstable in unfrozen plasma, were assayed at various intervals up to 24 hours using plasma from 20 thawed fresh frozen plasma (FFP) units. Comparisons were made between units stored at 4 and 25 C. The mean factor V value did not significantly change during the postthaw test period. Mean factor VIII activity prior to freezing was 121 per cent, dropped to 89 per cent four hours after thawing, and gradually decreased to 67 per cent at 24 hours. There was no difference between those units stored at 4 C and those stored at 25 C after thawing; therefore, refrigeration does not appear necessary for factor V or VIII stability up to 24 hours after thawing.

Spuriously positive direct antiglobulin tests caused by use of silicone gel.

The direct antiglobulin test using broad-spectrum antihuman globulin was spuriously positive for eight subjects (13%) when red blood cells from silicone gel separation tubes were used. These observations demonstrate that serum separator tubes containing silicone gel have limited use in the blood bank and transfusion service, especially when direct antiglobulin tests must be performed. The tests were positive with anti-C3 reagent, but were negative with anti-IgG when monospecific antihuman globulin was used.

Pseudosarcomatous fibromyxoid tumor of the bladder: biphasic contrast-enhanced helical CT findings.

We report a case of pseudosarcomatous fibromyxoid tumor of the bladder in a 23-year-old man with a 2 month history of painless gross hematuria, which was studied by biphasic contrast-enhanced helical CT. CT demonstrated a 2 cm diameter polypoid enhancing mass in the anterior bladder wall. The lesion measured 103 and 91 HU on early and delayed images, respectively. Increased contrast enhancement was attributed to a histologically highly vascular myxoid stroma.
