Serotype and sulphonamide sensitivity of meningococci isolated from 1966 to 1971.

From 1966 to 1971, 298 cultures of meningococci from clinical material (cerebrospinal fluid or blood) were examined. Eighty-nine cultures were from the Manchester area and the remainder from other parts of England or Northern Ireland. Five per cent of strains were group A, 57% group B, and 31% group C; 6% were untypable. Eighteen strains (6%) had an MIC of 6.4 mug/ml or more of sodium sulphadiazine and 10 of these (3.5%) an MIC of 50 to 100 mug/ml. The incidence of sulphonamide resistance was higher in group A strains than in group B or group C strains.

Agglutinin response to pertussis vaccination in the child.

Children were immunized with plain pertussis vaccine made by three manufacturers in 1967. After a primary course of three injections at monthly intervals, starting at 3-4 months of age, the agglutinin response was poor. Even after a "booster" dose, given five months later, not all of the vaccines had stimulated a response to all three pertussis agglutinogens. A further investigation with current vaccines of different kinds administered according to more than one schedule is recommended.

Progress in reducing the TCDD/TCDF content of effluents, pulps and wastewater treatment sludges from the manufacturing of bleached chemical pulp.

This report summarizes the data received in response to NCASI's 1996 "Industry-Wide Dioxin Profile" and data on tissue concentrations in fish taken downstream from mill discharges. The current survey was the sixth effort to update industry accomplishments since the "104 Mill Study" in 1988. As of the end of 1996, bleaching export vector TCDD/TCDF contents have been reduced by 94% on a TEQ basis from the 1988 level. The few observations above nominal detection limits tend to be from mills that have not supplied new data to NCASI. Current releases are approaching the point where the difference between the estimate and "non-detect" levels is hardly quantifiable. The analysis of data on fish tissue taken downstream of pulp mill discharges showed an average 24% per year decrease, reflecting reductions in effluent loadings.
