Cytochemical leukocyte reactions in normal children.

Five cytochemical reactions in current use (MPO, PAS, LAP, SB and EST) were operated on 180 children aged 1 month to 6 years, divided into three age groups (less than 12 months, 1-3 years and 3-6 years). No significant differences are apparent from one group to another, and the mean values are identical with those of adults. On the other hand, certain variations are evident in comparison with the scores of newborn children: important decrease in LAP, increase in SB, EST and PAS. These tests should be done in investigations of inborn metabolic errors, chromosome anomalies, blood diseases, and defects in defense mechanisms.

[Cerebrospinal fluid cytology in acute leukemias. (Use of cytocentrifugation for blast cell identification)].

The authors studied cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 51 patients with malignant blood diseases. 136 assays were performed over a three month period. In children, two technics were used; in the first case, smears were done with cells obtained through centrifugation; in the second case, CSF was directly thrown on glass slides in a special cytocentrifuge. Only the latter was performed for adults. In each case, the results of the cytological analysis were compared with those of cyto-chemical assay and clinical status.

[Tetrazolim nitroblue reduction test. Influence of the latex on the reliability of the results].

The finding of sudden variations in the results of the N.B.T. reduction test, using Baehner and Nathan's technique, depending on the latex used, led the authors to doubt the quality of this latex. A comparative study was carried out on adult controls with two different types of latex. With the new type of latex, the results were more reproducible and the sensitivity of the technique was increased. A study in rheumatoid arthritis confirmed these two findings and showed that the new latex was more reliable using the N.B.T. reduction test.

[IgG type autoimmune hemolytic anemia in a 7-week-old infant].

A 7 week old infant was admitted for auto-immune hemolytic anemia, of progressive onset. Auto-antibodies were of IgG nature and of anti-e and anti-nl specificity. Treatment associated transfusions of leukocyte-free blood and corticosteroids reaching 4,5 mg/kg/day. Hemolysis stopped after 15 days and corticosteroid therapy was stopped without incident over 30 days. One month later, the clinical status was excellent, blood count was normal and immuno-hematological tests were negative. This case is a new one of the few auto-immune hemolytic anemias in children under 3 months of age. All showed an adequate immune development allowing the typical clinical and biological picture of an auto-immune disease, in spite of the classical idea of immunological immaturity, at this age.

[Association of Fanconi's disease and hepatic tumor in a patient undergoing long-term androgen treatment].

A Fanconi's disease was discovered in a 9 1/2 year old girl. She received androgens daily and died with a severe aplastic attack after 4 years of evolution. Hepatic involvement of treatment with androgens was regularly checked. Autopsy however, showed a multinodular adenoma of the liver without any malignant manifestation. Relationships between aplastic anemia, long-term treatment with androgens and tumour of the liver are discussed. The difficulty of in vivo diagnosis is emphasized.
