Influence of social class and fluoridation on child dental health.
In this study in oral epidemiology, officially collected statistics are presented which show that, 15 yr after fluoridation commenced in Auckland, New Zealand, there was still a significant correlation between dental health of children and their social class. They also show that treatment levels have continued to decline in both fluoridated and unfluoridated areas, and are related to social class factors rather than to the presence or absence of water fluoridation. In the unfluoridated areas all the children, and in the fluoridated areas only selected children, had received regular topical fluoride treatments. In both areas the use of fluoride tooth-pastes and oral hygiene had been encouraged. When the socioeconomic variable is allowed for, child dental health appears to be better in the unfluoridated areas.

New evidence on fluoridation.
An overview, developed following a world study tour on fluoridation, is presented. Differences in attitudes and practice in various countries are outlined. Some of the possible reasons for these differences are discussed, together with recent evidence which could change the perceived balance of risks and benefit which determine one's judgement on fluoridation. Such a value judgement is essentially a subjective one, influenced but not determined by scientific knowledge. The fluoridation controversy and the case for fluoridation, in the light of this changed balance, is examined.

Immediate reduction in smoking habits has been sustained for 12 months amongst Busselton schoolchildren after antismoking programmes. Evaluation of the programmes demonstrates the value of emphasizing the immediate effects of smoking, and the need to give children the ability to cope with social pressures before they reach secondary schools.
