[Tracheostomy in the sleep apnea syndrome].

Two cases of sleep apnea syndrome treated by tracheostomy are described. Indications and rationale for tracheostomy are outlined. The hasard of preoperative premedication or the use of mild sedatives is stressed.

The serum cholesterol value at birth and at the age of 5 weeks.

The cholesterol value of cord blood has been determined in 303 newborns and their mothers at parturition. The mean value was 72 mg/100 ml for the newborns and 253 mg/100 ml in the mothers. By multiple regression analysis it has been shown that a significant independent correlation exists between cord blood cholesterol and the cholesterol of the mothers, birth weight, sex and the blood group of the ABO system of both the newborn and the mother. This demonstrates that several factors known to influence cholesterol in adult life are already operating at birth. Within 1 month the mean serum cholesterol value rises from 77 mg/100 ml at birth to 131 mg/100 ml in 45 infants in whom it was measured.

Serum lipids in the People's Republic of China. Comparison of Western and Eastern populations.

Serum cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels were measured in an urban and a rural population of the People's Republic of China and compared with cholesterol values obtained in Belgium and in the Republic of Korea, with use of the same methodology. Total cholesterol levels were markedly lower in the People's Republic of China than in Belgium and generally lower than in Korea, both in male and female subjects. However, the differences in HDL cholesterol levels among the three populations were small in males and only significantly higher in Belgium in the age classes below 34 years. In women of all age groups, HDL cholesterol values were significantly higher in Belgium than in China and Korea. Total cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dl were found in the People's Republic of China in about 2% of the participants. Apolipoprotein B was significantly lower, and the apolipoprotein A1/B ratio was significantly higher, in China and Korea compared to Belgium.

[The contribution of oto-vestibular studies in the diagnosis of vertebrobasilar insufficiency--(VBI)].

The high incidence of oto-vestibular complaints in patients presenting vertebro-basilar insufficiency (VBI) is emphasized. In some studies up to 90% of the patients are complaining from dizziness, oscillopsia or tinnitus. The indications of the oto-vestibular evaluation and its importance in the diagnosis of VBI is discussed. The authors lay stress on the fact that the Romberg test is not valuable as a vestibular functional screening test, but that only a full oto-vestibular evaluation will contribute to the diagnosis of VBI.
