High-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance in magnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

We analyze the high-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) absorption in a weakly anisotropic Heisenberg magnet having two distinct types of anisotropy, represented, respectively, by a symmetric term and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) term. Contrary to the widespread opinion that the latter is responsible for the excessive linewidth observed in the EPR spectra of many oxides, we prove that its contribution to the linewidth is only of the same level as that of the symmetric anisotropy. This gives a solution to the long-standing controversial problem of the high-temperature magnetic relaxation in quantum-spin systems with the DM interaction.

Preconception selection of sex in man.

The determination of sex is influenced by ionic factors. In man, ionic imbalance is responsible for the sex ratio in at least 80% of cases, the possible mechanism being one of selective fertilization. These facts constitute the scientific basis for the medicodietary method of selecting sex. The intervention of ions in ovarian metabolism is obtained by controlling the diet of the woman, the decisive factor being the ratio of K+ + Na+ to Ca2+ + Mg2+ in the daily diet. High values of this ratio lead to boys, and low values to girls. Using this method since 1970 in 47 births, only 7 of them failed to produce the expected sex. The interactions and the causes of failure are analyzed.

[Simultaneous intra- and extra- uterine pregnancies (author's transl)].

Six further cases of simultaneous intra- and extra-uterine pregnancies are reported. The findings confirm those reported in the published literature. The frequency of such cases in one in 30 000 pregnancies. It is evident, however, that some cases, in which spontaneous abortion occurs, remain unrecognized, the haemorrhage being attributed to the extra-uterine gestation. In 90 p. cent of cases they are detected because of the extra-uterine pregnancy, and their clinical course is very variable. The association of pregnancies is almost as frequent as triplets but is very rarely mentioned. Valid clinical and pathogenic data could be obtained from their more systematic study.

[Approach of the gynecologist-obstetrician to deep phlebitis of the leg].

The authors recall that early diagnosis and treatment are essential if cure without sequelae is to be obtained. The principle of treatment is based on two essential phases : heparinization (with continuous infusion), antivitamins K, which follow on. Several products, known empirically, may be used in addition, either during the acute phase (hydergine, infiltrations of novocaine, etc.) or during the secondary phase (vitamins P associated with vitamin E, ETC.). Special points :phlebitis during pregnancy requires heparin treatment of short duration. Antivitamins K are strictly contraindicated and ineffective ; great importance is attached to prophyllaxis.
