Proline hydroxylation of collagens synthesized at different temperatures in vivo by two poikilothermic species.

Extent of prolyl hydroxylation in newly synthesized viper collagen is decreased at 10 degrees C to approximately 23% of normal on skin and to approximately 57% of normal in bone collagen. At 20 degrees C, prolyl hydroxylation is approximately 50% of normal in skin and normal in bone. At 10 degrees C and 20 degrees C, prolyl hydroxylation is decreased approximately 32% in the skin collagen of carp. In contrast, prolyl hydroxylation is unchanged at 10 and 20 degrees C in bone, scale and lepidotrichia. Prolyl hydroxylation of cartilaginous endoskeleton showed an approximately 25% decrease at 20 degrees C.

[Experimental demonstration of the annual characteristic of the lines of arrest of skeletal growth in Rana esculenta (Amphibia, anura)].

Different vital fluorescent labelling (tetracycline, calcein, xylenol orange, alizarine red S) have been injected in a series of young growing green frogs, caught near Paris and kept for 2 years in captivity under conditions quite similar to natural ones. The study of femur and phalanx has been carried out by ground sections observed in UV light and then colored with hematoxyline. The comparison between UV and transmitted light observations shows that the arrested growth lines are annual, laid during winter and never completely destroyed by bone remodelling. Then, they constitute a valuable criterion to assess the age of the individual.

The fine structure of calcified Mandl's corpuscles in teleost fish scales.

Calcified Mandl's corpuscles present in the internal layer (or fibrillary plate) of the teleost fish scale were studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy for a better understanding of this special type of mineralization process. The corpuscles show a great variability in their structure, form and surface features depending on the arrangement of the collagen fibrils in the internal layer of the different fish species studied, on the localization of the corpuscles in the scale and on the technical treatment to which the scale is subjected.

The fibrous structure of coelacanth scales: a twisted 'plywood'.

Isopedin is a network of collagen bundles present in the scales of most fishes. The scales of coelacanths show a remarkable three-dimensional arrangement of this network which is similar to a regularly twisted plywood. The successive fibrous layers cross at an angle which differs slightly from a right angle. It results that the whole system is twisted. The progressive rotation of the fibril direction is right-handed. Certain preferential orientations of fibrils have been observed, namely parallel to the growth rings. Such arrangments also exist in the embryonic cornea of birds and in the cuticle of certain insects, but do not present such an extensive and regular development.

[Heparin-like anticoagulant in small cell bronchial carcinoma].

Acquired circulating heparin-like anticoagulants may have different causes, the most frequent being plasmocyte proliferation. The authors report an exceptional case of association between an heparin-like inhibitor and a small-cell anaplastic lung carcinoma, and they review the pathogenesis, laboratory diagnostic methods and treatment of the anticoagulant.

Demodicidosis in an immunodeficient child.

A 15-month-old girl developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Chemotherapy had induced a complete remission and she was continued on maintenance therapy. At 3 years of age, she developed an eruption consisting of excoriated papules and pustules on the face. Demodex folliculorum seemed to be the cause. Topical treatment with metronidazole applied twice a day over a period of 2 weeks resulted in partial improvement. The dermatosis finally cleared gradually with oral erythromycin therapy and one overnight application of 1% lindane cream per week for 2 successive weeks.
