A longitudinal radiographic investigation was made of the progression of the proximal alveolar bone loss over a 10-year period (1970-1980). The material was unselected and consisted of 669 individuals in the county of Stockholm. Sixty-one individuals were randomly selected for evaluation of a recording system using alternative methods of measurement, and 90% of the measurement sites could then be assessed. The correlations between some of the methods were high, such as between measurement of alveolar bone height and root length and between alveolar bone height and tooth length. To reduce the number of measurements, a partial recording was made, giving a high correlation coefficient between the partial recording and total recording. When five measurement sites (12 m, 11 m, 33 d, 31 d, 41 m) were were used, the correlation coefficient was 0.96, and a slight increase of the coefficient was obtained when using additional sites.

Pulegone and menthol, components of peppermint oil, were investigated in rats. The substances were administered by gavage for 28 days at 0, 20, 80, 160 mg pulegone and 0, 200, 400, 800 mg menthol/kg body wt./day, respectively. At the two highest doses, pulegone induced atonia, decreased blood creatinine content, lowered terminal body weight and caused histopathological changes in the liver and in the white matter of cerebellum. For menthol at all dose levels a significant increase in absolute and relative liver weights and vacuolisation of hepatocytes was found. No sign of encephalopathy was observed in rats given menthol. The no effect level for pulegone was 20 mg/kg body wt./day and for menthol less than 200 mg/kg body wt./day.
Peppermint oil was given p.o. to groups of 10 male and 10 female rats at dosage levels of 0, 10, 40 and 100 mg/kg bw/day respectively for 28 days. Histopathological changes in the white matter of the cerebellum especially were seen at dose levels of 40 and 100 mg/kg bw/day and consisted of cyst-like spaces scattered in the white matter. There were no obvious signs of clinical symptoms due to the encephalopathy.
A method is suggested to obtain solubility parameters for crystalline solid compounds involving a quadratic equation based on the original Scatchard-Hildebrand solubility expression. The geometric mean delta 1 delta 2, of the Hildebrand approach is replaced by w12 = K delta 1 delta 2, and log alpha 2/(V2 phi 2(2)/2.3RT) is regressed against delta 1 in a second-degree power series for parabens and benzoic acid in a series of normal alcohols. The method provides reasonable solubility parameters for the solid solutes and affords a convenient calculation of the solubility of drugs in a homologous series of solvents.
Evaluation of the safety of chemicals in food have created considerable interest within the public, political, administrative, and scientific sectors in many parts o- the world. Political and administrative approaches may vary from country to country depdneing on traditions and cultural pattern. The political aims and goals of our times may be clearly defined, but they are often rather obscure seen from a scientific point of view. Health authorities are supposed to interpret the political intentions and transcribe them into practical administration. The use, by national and international health authorities, of the available scientific and technological knowledge to evaluate the safety of the food in question is discussed.

In pigs given injections of 1.5 mill IU vitamin D3 in oil intramuscularly 9, 5 or 3 weeks before slaughter residues in the depots were very high (table 1). Certain cuts of pork from pigs treated in this way should therefore be regarded as unacceptably polluted. Furthermore the practise of using oily vitamin D preparations for injection in veterinary medicine appears to be unjustified in modern husbandry.

Menthone, a component of peppermint oil, was given p.o. to groups of 10 male and 10 female rats at dose levels of 0, 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg b.w./day, respectively, for 28 days. After 19 days the dose was reduced to 400 mg/kg b.w. in the female group receiving the highest dose. Analyses of plasma showed a dose-dependent decrease in creatinine content and a dose-dependent increase in alkaline phosphatase activity and bilirubin. The relative weights of liver and spleen were increased. Cyst-like spaces were seen histopathologically in the white matter of the cerebellum of the two highest dose groups. The no-effect level for menthone in this study was lower than 200 mg/kg b.w./day.

The amounts of N-nitrosoproline (NPRO) excreted in the urine of lacto-vegetarians and subjects eating a free-choice diet were determined. The study was carried out during four consecutive weeks and specified extra amounts of ascorbic acid were ingested daily during three of them. The average amount of NPRO excreted in the urine of the lacto-vegetarians (1.33 micrograms/24 h) was slightly smaller than that in the urine of the individuals eating a free-choice diet (2.13 micrograms/24 h). Intake of as little as 3 x 20 mg of extra ascorbic acid per day reduced the NPRO excretion. Intake of 3 x 1000 mg of ascorbic acid resulted in a statistically significant decrease in NPRO excretion in the urine.
The validity of the reported geographic variations of breast carcinoma incidence in Sweden was assessed by examination of two possible sources of bias: non-notification to the Cancer Registry of diagnosed carcinoma cases and 'biologically benign' breast carcinoma, i.e. with a low disease-specific lethality, e.g. detected accidentally at autopsy. No significant geographic differences in registration deficit were found even though non-notification tended to be slightly higher for old patients in low-incidence areas. Autopsy cases were estimated to account for less than one per cent of all cases and tended to be more frequent in high-incidence areas but the regional differences were generally small and not significant. An analysis of the relationship between 10-year relative survival and age-standardized incidence in 27 different regions revealed no significant correlation, whereas there was a significant positive correlation between age-standardized incidence and mortality. These findings indicate that non-lethal breast carcinoma cases do not explain the variations of incidence. In conclusion, no evidence was found suggesting that the geographic differences were artifactual. Registration deficit and autopsy cases, however, may have slightly increased the variations among elderly women.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of pamidronate 60 mg i.v. q 4 weeks in women with advanced breast cancer with skeletal metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 404 woman with skeletal metastases from breast cancer in Sweden and Norway were included in a randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter study. Except for the study medication, other palliative treatment was chosen at the discretion of the physician. Skeletal related events, i.e. increased pain, treatment of hypercalcemia, pathologic fractures of long bones or pelvis, paralyses due to vertebral compression, palliative radiotherapy for skeletal metastases, surgery on bone and change of antitumor therapy were recorded every third month as well as a self-estimated pain-score using visual Analog Scales and analgesic consumption. RESULTS: There was a significantly increased time to progression of pain (p < 0.01), to hypercalcemic events (p < 0.05) as well as for the cumulative number of skeletal related events (p < 0.01) in favor for the pamidronate group. No statistically significant reduction of pathologic fractures of long bones or pelvis, or pareses due to vertebral compression occurred. No statistically significant differences were found for the need of radiotherapy and surgery on bone. The pamidronate group faired better regarding performance status (p < 0.05). There was a statistically not significant lower consumption of opioid analgesics in the pamidronate group (p = 0.14). CONCLUSION: Pamidronate 60 mg i.v. q 4 weeks reduces skeletal events and improves the quality of life in women with bone metastases from breast cancer.
