There are many problems in demography involving the smoothing or interpolation of data. Usually a solution is obtained by fitting a polynomial or a suitable model curve. Often, however, fitting a spline proves to be a simple recourse. Splines, were invented nearly 30 years ago and have been shown to have desirable properties. Although spline functions are by no means unknown to demographers, no simple and direct explanation of their application exists. We hope to remedy this deficiency with this expository piece.

1. The major metabolite after incubating aniline with sheep intestine was acetanilide. 2. Other metabolites detected in smaller amounts were 2-aminophenol, 4-aminophenol, 2-acetamidophenol and 4-acetamidophenol. 3. The rumen, abomasum duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon were all able to acetylate aniline. 4. 4-Aminophenol, 4-aminobenzoic acid, 4-anisidine and 4-nitroaniline were also acetylated.

Several parameters of drug-metabolising capacity were measured in samples taken from various regions of the sheep liver. A statistically significant difference of 10 per cent between mean values of enzyme activities of the ventral and dorsal lobes was found. This could be ignored when compared with the expected treatment effect. It is concluded that the biopsy technique provides a sufficiently representative sample of the whole liver for use in studies of the type described. The results also indicated that the liver enzyme levels of young lambs were lower than those of older lambs and adult sheep. Sheep dosed with hexachlorobenzene (hcb) showed increased activities of aniline hydroxylase and 4-nitroanisole O-demethylase but not of the NADPH-independent esterases. It is concluded that HCB induces the drug-metabolising enzymes of sheep liver.
The manifold of the Sequential Multiple Analyzer SMA 6/60 (4 + 2) has been modified to decrease serum sample size to 90 mul, by using a common diluent for all six channels and recycling the discard of each dialyzer into the next one. The modification can be made in less than 4 h without the need for any additional parts; the modified manifold requires one-third fewer pump lines and fewer reagents, thus reducing operating costs and simplifying instrument maintenance, while retaining the same precision, speed, low carryover, and linearity of the production model.

1. An analytical h.p.l.c. method has been developed which permits the separation and quantification of the in vitro metabolites of 4-aminobiphenyl (4-ABP). The method employs gradient elution from a reverse phase column. 2. The major metabolite in vitro of 4-ABP in liver fractions from rat, mouse, guinea-pig, rabbit and hamster was N-hydroxy-4-aminobiphenyl. 3. The observation that liver fractions from the guinea-pig are very effective in the n-hydroxylation of 4-ABP is in excellent agreement with the 1966 report from Kiese's laboratory, showing that the N-hydroxylation of 4-ABP is an important metabolic pathway in vivo in this species. 4. The ortho-phenol, 3-hydroxy-4-aminobiphenyl was also an important metabolite in each species except guinea-pig and rabbit. 5. Hydroxylation at the 4' and 2' positions was a minor pathway in all species studied. 6. Aroclor 1254 was a potent inducer of N-hydroxylation in rat, mouse and guinea-pig but not hamster and rabbit. Phenobarbital induced N-hydroxylation in rabbit and guinea-pig but not rat, while methylcholanthrene induced in rat and guinea-pig but not rabbit.
