Evaluation of developmental toxicity of amitraz in Sprague-Dawley rats.

This study investigated the potential adverse effects of amitraz on the initiation and maintenance of pregnancy in Sprague-Dawley rats as well as its effects on embryo-fetal development after maternal exposure during the entire pregnancy period. Amitraz was administered to pregnant rats by gavage from days 1 to 19 of gestation at dose levels of 0, 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg/day. All dams underwent a caesarean section on day 20 of gestation and their fetuses were examined for any external, visceral, and skeletal abnormalities. At 30 mg/kg, maternal toxicity manifested as an increase in the incidence of abnormal clinical signs and a lower body weight gain and food intake. Developmental toxicity included an increase in the fetal death rate, a decrease in the litter size, and a reduction in the fetal body weight. In addition, there was an increase in the incidence of fetal external, visceral, and skeletal abnormalities. At 10 mg/kg, maternal toxicity observed included a decrease in the body weight gain and a decrease in food intake. In addition, minimal developmental toxicity, including a decrease in the fetal body weight, an increase in the visceral and skeletal aberrations, and a delay in fetal ossification. There were no signs of either maternal toxicity or developmental toxicity at 3 mg/kg. These results show that amitraz administered during the entire pregnancy period in rats is embryotoxic and teratogenic at the maternally toxic dose (i.e., 30 mg/kg/day) and is minimally embryotoxic at a minimally maternally toxic dose (i.e., 10 mg/kg/day). Under these experimental conditions, the no-observed-adverse-effect level of amitraz for both dams and embryo-fetal development is estimated to be 3 mg/kg/day.

Efficacy of PET/CT in the accurate evaluation of primary colorectal carcinoma.

AIM: This study was performed to assess in the accurate evaluation of primary colorectal carcinoma using PET/CT. METHODS: One hundred patients with primary colorectal carcinoma were evaluated during 2004. All patients underwent PET/CT when their preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen was >or=10 ng/mL or when CT showed equivocal findings. The appropriateness of PET/CT-induced changes was noted by subsequent operative findings and follow-up. RESULTS: PET/CT more detected 15 intra-abdominal metastatic lesions than abdomino-pelvic CT scan. PET/CT showed true negative findings in 13 patients and false positive or negative findings in 10. Due to PET/CT results, management plans were altered in 27 patients; 9 had inter-modality changes, 10 received more extensive surgery, and 8 avoided unnecessary procedures. CONCLUSIONS: PET/CT altered management plan in 24% of patients with primary colorectal carcinoma in correct direction. These findings suggest that PET/CT should be considered a part of standard work up for preoperative evaluation in a subset of patients with colorectal carcinoma.

Endothelial progenitor cells in pterygium pathogenesis.

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of pterygium is not well known, and controversy exists about the cell origins and the nature of initial trigger required for its development. We investigated whether endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are involved in pathogenesis of pterygium and the mechanism underlying the selective recruitment of EPCs during this process. METHODS: We studied 13 normal controls and 28 pterygium patients (primary (n=15), recurrent (n=13)). Substance-P, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and stem cell factor (SCF) were measured in plasma and tears using ELISA, and circulating CD34(+) and c-kit(+) mononuclear cells (MNCs) by flow cytometry. Anterior segment fluorescein angiography (FAG) was performed to evaluate hypoxic conditions in the early stage of pterygium. Surgically removed pterygial tissues were analyzed immunohistochemically using the progenitor cell markers, CD34, c-kit, VEGFR-1, and VEGFR-2. RESULTS: Anterior segment FAG findings showed an increase in non-perfusion areas and attenuated vessels in the nasal limbus during early-stage pterygium. Circulating CD34(+) MNCs and c-kit(+) MNCs were increased in pterygium groups compared with normal controls. Systemic and local cytokines including SP, VEGF, and SCF in pterygium groups were also elevated and showed positive correlations with CD34(+) and c-kit(+) MNC numbers. Immunohistochemical analysis of pterygium showed strong progenitor cell marker immunoreactivities. CONCLUSIONS: EPCs might be involved in pterygium development, and ocular hypoxia triggers this neovascularization by recruiting EPCs derived from the bone marrow via the production of systemic and local cytokines.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma of the colon.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a recently recognised soft tissue neoplasm. It is rare and has a tendency to arise from deep soft tissue of the lower extremities. An origin from the colon has not been reported in the medical literature. We report the low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma originating from the colon in a 43-year-old male patient, treated by right hemicolectomy and nephrectomy.

Mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in a rabbit corneal alkali burn model: engraftment and involvement in wound healing.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether systemically transplanted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can home and engraft in tissue to promote cornea wound healing after alkali burn, as a new source for treatment. METHODS: Corneal alkali burn was created in four group rabbits: Group I, normal bone marrow function, without MSCs transplantation; Group II, normal bone marrow function, with MSCs transplantation; Group III, bone marrow suppressed by cyclophosphamide, without MSCs; Group IV, bone marrow suppressed by cyclophosphamide, with MSCs. Clinical outcome was evaluated by cornea re-epithelization, cornea opacity, and neovascularization. Cell engraftment into bone marrow, circulation, and cornea was monitored. Immunohistochemistry, using proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), P63, vimentin, and alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) was carried out to assess the cell proliferative and differentiative ability. RESULTS: At the time of 1-month follow-up, Group II rabbits showed the best clinical results with a clearer healed cornea compared with other groups. Well-formed neovascularization appeared on day 14 after alkali burn in Group II, that coincided with the maximum engraftment of MSCs. PCNA, P63, vimentin were more strongly expressed in Group II at multiple time points. DiI-labelled MSCs were differentiated into myofibroblast by the expression of alpha-SMA. Delayed and insufficient cell engraftment, with malformed neovascularization and retarded corneal wound healing was found in Groups III and IV. CONCLUSIONS: Systemically transplanted MSCs can engraft to injured cornea to promote wound healing, by differentiation, proliferation, and synergizing with haemotopoietic stem cells.

Involvement of circulating endothelial progenitor cells and vasculogenic factors in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

PURPOSE: Retinal neovascularization in diabetes has been thought to follow the release of local angiogenic factors in the retina. We hypothesize that neovascularization of diabetic retinopathy is a systemic vasculogenesis rather than a local angiogenesis. Thus, we evaluate the concentrations of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and stem cell modulation factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), erythropoietin (Epo), and substance p (SP) in the peripheral blood of diabetic retinopathy patients. METHODS: We studied 15 normal controls and 45 type II diabetic patients (no DR group (n=15), NPDR group (n=15), and PDR group (n=15)). We measured circulating CD34+mononuclear cells (CD34+MNCs), c-Kit+mononuclear cells (c-Kit+MNCs) by flow cytometry. VEGF, Epo, and SP in the peripheral blood were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: The circulating CD34+MNCs and c-Kit+MNCs increased in the NPDR and PDR groups compared with the control group (P<0.01). Serum level of VEGF increased in the NPDR and PDR groups compared with the control group (P<0.05). The level of Epo elevated exclusively in the no DR group compared with the other three groups (P<0.01). Circulating SP level increased in the NPDR and PDR groups compared with the control group (P<0.05). SP and CD34+MNCs were shown to have increased correlation according to the diabetic retinopathy in the NPDR and PDR groups (r=0.440, P<0.05 and r=0.460, P<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The present study is the first to demonstrate that CD34+MNCs, c-Kit+MNCs and their modulator are elevated in diabetic retinopathy patients. Therefore, it is possible that circulating EPCs and serum Epo, VEGF, and SP may be involved in the progression of diabetic retinopathy.

[Comparative study of treatment of the dry eye syndrome due to disturbances of the tear film lipid layer with lipid-containing tear substitutes].

BACKGROUND: A deficiency in the tear film lipid layer is aetiological in about 80 % of the patients suffering from dry eye, which results in excessive evaporation (so-called hyperevaporative dry eye). The treatment with conventional artificial tears did not prove to be successful here. In this study the treatment with two tear substitutes containing lipids were set in contrast with each other. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The randomised, controlled, multicentre cross-over study included 74 patients suffering from dry eye caused by a deficiency of the tear film lipid layer, which were organised into two groups. Group A (n = 38) was treated for the first 6 weeks with a liposomal eye spray (Tears Again), while the patients of the group of B (n = 36) were treated with an eye gel containing triglycerides (Liposic) in the same period. After 6 weeks the crossover was performed. The patients were treated in the following 6 weeks with the product which was not used before. Control examinations by masked examiners took place at the beginning of the study as well as after 6 and 12 weeks, considering the following parameters: eyelid edge-parallel conjunctival folds (LIPCOF), BREAK UP time (BUT), Schimer-I test, measurement of the tear meniscus, investigation of the edges of eyelid and visual acuity. In addition. the subjective feelings of the patients were also determined by means of questionnaires. RESULTS: At the beginning of the study the two groups did not differ significantly with respect to the initial values. After the first treatment period the improvement of the examined parameters LIPCOF, BUT, Schirmer, visual acuity and inflammation of the lid margin in group A (eye spray) proved to be significantly superior in comparison to group B (eye gel). The results of the second treatment period after the crossover were similar and showed an analogous supremacy of the liposomal eye spray. The interviews with the patients revealed that the subjective evaluation concerning efficacy and compatibility of the eye spray turned out to be explicitly more favourable than that concerning the eye gel. 74.6 % of the patients favoured the application as an eye spray onto the closed eyelids over the eye gel into the conjunctival sac. 62.5 % of the patients rated the liposomal eye spray to be better all in all, 12.5 % rated that both preparations are equal and 25 % favoured the eye gel. CONCLUSIONS: The treatment with phospholipids liposomes shows statistically significant clinical advantages and proves to be favourably and explicitly superior compared to the conventional standard treatment all in all.

Endoscopic removal of biliary self-expandable metallic stents: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: The transpapillary endoscopic insertion of self-expandable metallic stents (SEMSs) has been widely used for the palliation of unresectable malignant biliary obstruction. We attempted the endoscopic removal of malfunctioning SEMSs. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and safety of the endoscopic removal of SEMSs by comparing the results between removal of covered and uncovered SEMSs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 30 patients with a malfunctioning biliary SEMS prospectively underwent an attempt at endoscopic removal of the biliary SEMS over a 2-year period. Removal of the malfunctioning SEMS was done with a therapeutic duodenoscope (ED-450XT5 or TJF-240), using a rat-tooth forceps. Of the 30 SEMS used, 22 were silicone-covered Wallstents, while eight were uncovered SEMSs including five uncovered Wallstents and three Zilver stents. The time for an attempt at each endoscopic removal was limited to 15 minutes in a single endoscopic procedure session. RESULTS: The covered SEMSs were easily removed in 19 out of 22 patients (86.4 %), whereas none of the eight uncovered SEMSs (0 %) could be removed. The only factor predicting successful stent removal was the presence of a stent covering ( P = 0.000). There was no morbidity or mortality related to endoscopic removal of malfunctioning stents. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to uncovered biliary SEMSs, in most cases malfunctioning covered biliary SEMSs can be easily and safely removed endoscopically using a rat-tooth forceps.

Evaluation of subchronic inhalation toxicity of dimethyl disulfide in rats.

This study was carried out to investigate the potential subchronic inhalation toxicity of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) via whole-body exposure in F344 rats. Groups of 10 rats of each sex were exposed to DMDS vapor by whole-body exposure at concentrations of 0, 5, 25, or 125 ppm for 6 h/day, 5 days/wk for 13 wk. All the rats were sacrificed at the end of treatment period. During the test period, clinical signs, mortality, body weights, food consumption, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, gross findings, organ weights, and histopathology were examined. At 25 ppm, a decrease in the body weight gain, food intake, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was observed in the males, but not in the females. However, at 125 ppm, a decrease in the body weight gain, food intake, and thymus weight and an increase in the weights of adrenal glands were observed in both genders. Serum biochemical investigations revealed a decrease in the AST, ALT, BUN, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and triglyceride levels and an increase in the glucose level. In contrast, no treatment-related effects were observed in the 5 ppm group. The toxic potency of DMDS was slightly higher in males than that in females. In these experimental conditions, the target organ was not determined in rats. The no-observed-adverse-effect concentration (NOAEC) was found to be 5 ppm, 6 h/day for male rats and 25 ppm, 6 h/day for female rats.

Isolation and characterization of outer root sheath melanocytes of human hair follicles.

BACKGROUND: Outer root sheath melanocytes (ORSM) are not yet routinely cultured and their biology is not known in detail because of their relatively low numbers in the hair follicle and their limited proliferative capacity in in vitro culture in routine media. OBJECTIVES: To develop a method for culturing ORSM more easily and to investigate the length of telomeres and antigenic characteristics of ORSM compared with epidermal melanocytes (EM). METHODS: Hair follicles were obtained from three Korean individuals during hair transplantation surgery. Single-cell suspensions of the outer root sheath were made and cultured in melanocyte growth medium with stem cell factor. After 21 days, second-passage outer root sheath keratinocytes (ORSK) (2 x 10(4) mL(-1) MGM) were added into the culture plates. We studied the proliferation pattern, morphological and antigenic characteristics of ORSM for each passage of cultured cells, and observed ORSM telomere length. RESULTS: We established an ORSM culture method using ORSK. Two morphologically different ORSM types were obtained in the primary cultures. At the end of primary culture, ORSM appeared as whitish-cream pellets. The proliferation pattern of ORSM showed a sigmoidal shape, the accumulated numbers of population doublings showed a plateau after approximately 5 months, and senescence occurred at approximately 33 +/- 5 accumulated population doublings. The length of ORSM telomeres continued to shorten as the cells proliferated. In contrast, EM showed a marked proliferation from the early proliferation period which formed a plateau pattern towards the later period, and the number of accumulated population doublings was estimated to be 18 +/- 5 after 2 months. ORSM in the primary culture reacted variably with l-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA): some cells were DOPA negative, some DOPA positive. There were some different antigenic expressions of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) showing cytoplasmic expression in ORSM and nuclear expression in EM. By nuclear extraction and Western blotting, we showed that MITF expression of ORSM was marked in the cytoplasm and minimal in the nucleus. Antigenic expression of MITF and Bcl-2 gradually decreased with increasing passage number, whereas tyrosinase-related protein-1 expression did not change. CONCLUSIONS: Culture of ORSM requires ORSK or ORSK-related factors; ORSM have greater proliferation potential and show different MITF antigenic expression compared with EM; and the length of ORSM telomeres shortens with repeated proliferation.

Metachronous colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Although the diagnosis of metachronous colorectal cancer have increased, due primarily to improvements in diagnostic modalities, the potential risk factors for these tumours are not well known. We compared the characteristics of patients with metachronous and sporadic primary colorectal cancer to determine risk factors for its occurrence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of 5447 patients with colorectal cancer, who had been treated at Asan Medical Centre between July 1989 and January 2004. A metachronous cancer was defined as a secondary colorectal cancer occurring more than 6 months after the index cancer. RESULTS: Metachronous colorectal cancer occurred in 39 (0.7%) patients. Their average age was 53 years, somewhat younger than the average age of sporadic colorectal cancer patients (58 years). In patients with metachronous cancer, the cancer was more likely to be located in the right colon (P < 0.03), and the incidence of synchronous polyps or cancer was significantly higher (P < 0.001). The relative distributions of histological grades and clinicopathological characteristics were similar in index and metachronous cancers. Metachronous cancers were diagnosed more frequently at an early stage. The time interval between index and metachronous cancer ranged from 6 to 215 months (mean 39 months), with 13 (33.3%) patients diagnosed with metachronous cancer after 5 years. CONCLUSION: We found that in patients aged < 50 years, existence of synchronous polyps or cancer influence on the development of metachronous colorectal cancer. Regular follow-up is necessary for early detection, even after 5 years, for these patients.

Design of a subcutaneous vascular access device using Ni-Ti SMA clamps for hemodialysis.

A subcutaneous vascular access device which utilizes an Ni-Ti shape memory alloy (Ni-Ti SMA) spring, has been developed as a new method for subcutaneous vascular access in the treatment of hemodialysis patients. Until now, the connection between the SVAD and needle cannot be externally monitored, and the clamp must be opened and closed with a percutaneous needle by a nephrologist. The SMA-SVAD accomplishes the opening and closing of its clamp using two Ni-Ti SMA springs, and a transcutaneous energy transmission system (TET) transmits energy to the Ni-Ti SMA springs without the need for percutaneous wires. Two SMA springs open and close the clamp of the SMA-SVAD, without affecting any of the other parts of the system. Wasted thermal energy is reduced to minimal values via electrical regional heating methods. The state of the SMA-SVAD can be monitored according to the amount of power consumed by the external energy transmitter. In in-vitro experiments, when the clamp was opened and the pressure difference in the hemodialysis machine was set to 50 mmHg, water flow through SMA-SVAD reached 500 ml/min. The maximal surface temperatures of the SVAD and catheter were successfully maintained at proper levels (approximately 38-39 degrees C), approximately 2-3 degrees higher than the temperature of the surrounding tissues. The time elapsed from the initiation of energy transmission until the opening of the SMA clamp was 5 seconds.

Phase II study of concurrent chemoradiotherapy with capecitabine and cisplatin in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of concurrent chemoradiotherapy with capecitabine and cisplatin in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). In total, 37 patients with stage III or IV SCCHN were enrolled on the study. The chemotherapy consisted of two cycles of intravenous cisplatin of 80 mg m(-2) on day 1 and oral capecitabine 825 mg m(-2) twice daily from day 1 to day 14 at 3-week intervals. The radiotherapy (1.8-2.0 Gy 1 fraction day(-1) to a total dose of 70-70.2 Gy) was delivered to the primary tumour site and neck. The primary tumour sites were as follows: oral cavity (n=6), oropharynx (n=11), hypopharynx (n=8), larynx (n=3), nasopharynx (n=6), and paranasal sinus (n=3). After the chemoradiotherapy, 29 complete responses (78.4%) and 6 partial responses (16.2%) were confirmed. Grade 3 or 4 neutropenia occurred only in two patients, plus grade 3 febrile neutropenia was observed only in one patient. At a median follow-up duration of 19.8 months, the estimated overall survival and progression-free survival rate at 2-year was 76.8 and 57.9%, respectively. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy with capecitabine and cisplatin was found to be well tolerated and effective in patients with locally advanced SCCHN.

Effects of pinitol isolated from soybeans on glycaemic control and cardiovascular risk factors in Korean patients with type II diabetes mellitus: a randomized controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of soybean-derived pinitol on glycaemic control and cardiovascular risk factors in Korean patients with type II diabetes mellitus. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial. SETTING: Pusan Paik Hospital, Pusan, Republic of Korea. INTERVENTIONS: A total of 30 patients with type II diabetes received an oral dose of 600 mg soybean-derived pinitol or placebo twice daily for 13 weeks. RESULTS: Pinitol significantly decreased mean fasting plasma glucose, insulin, fructosamine, HbA1c, and the homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR, P<0.001). Pinitol significantly decreased total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, the LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure and increased HDL-cholesterol (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that soybean-derived pinitol may be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk in Korean type II diabetes.

Effects of cold-water immersion on VEGF mRNA and protein expression in heart and skeletal muscles of rats.

AIM: The effects of cold exposure on gene and protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), in heart and skeletal muscles, were studied in male adult Wistar rats. METHODS: Cold immersion was accomplished by submerging the rats in shoulder-deep water maintained at approximately 18 degrees C, either acutely (1 h) or chronically (1 h day(-1), 5 days week(-1) for 20 weeks). The expressions of VEGF mRNA and protein in heart, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles were examined by Northern and Western blotting and competitive-polymerase chain reaction techniques. RESULTS: The expressions of VEGF mRNA and protein were markedly increased in cardiac muscle of the cold-immersed group, particularly in the 1-hour exposure group, whereas VEGF mRNA and protein in gastrocnemius were decreased significantly after an acute exposure. Although the protein level in gastrocnemius remained low in the chronically exposed group, the expression of mRNA of VEGF(165) with chronic exposure in this group returned to the control level and that of VEGF(206) was 15% greater than that in controls. The expression of mRNA for VEGF(165) in soleus was also lowered by acute cold exposure, although that for VEGF(206) was stable. However, VEGF protein was increased by 50%. After 20 weeks, all of these parameters were increased over the levels found in the controls. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the VEGF gene may be a major regulatory factor in cardiac and skeletal muscle adaptation to the cold environment stimulating angiogenesis and thermogenesis.

Activity of some aminoglycoside antibiotics against true fungi, Phytophthora and Pythium species.

AIMS: To investigate the in vitro antifungal and antioomycete activities of some aminoglycosides against true fungi and Phytophthora and Pythium species and to evaluate the potential of the antibiotics against Phytophthora late blight on plants. METHODS AND RESULTS: Antifungal and antioomycete activities of aminoglycoside antibiotics (neomycin, paromomycin, ribostamycin and streptomycin) and a paromomycin-producing strain (Streptomyces sp. AMG-P1) against Phytophthora and Pythium species and 10 common fungi were measured in potato dextrose broth (PDB) and on seedlings in pots. Paromomycin was the most active against Phytophthora and Pythium species with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 1-10 microg ml(-1) in PDB, but displayed low to moderate activities towards other common fungi at the same concentration. Paromomycin also showed potent in vivo activity against red pepper and tomato late blight diseases with 80 and 99% control value, respectively, at 100 microg ml(-1). In addition, culture broth of Streptomyces sp. AMG-P1 as a paromomycin producer exhibited high in vivo activity against late blight at 500 microg freeze-dried weight per millilitre. CONCLUSIONS: Among tested aminoglycoside antibiotics, paromomycin was the most active against oomycetes both in vitro and in vivo. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Data from this study show that aminoglycoside antibiotics have in vitro and in vivo activities against oomycetes, suggesting that Streptomyces sp. AMG-P1 may be used as a biocontrol agent against oomycete diseases.

Evaluation of spermatogenesis and fertility in F1 male rats after in utero and neonatal exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields.

AIM: To determine whether in utero and neonatal exposure to a 60 Hz extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) results in spermatotoxicity and reproductive dysfunction in the F1 offspring of rats. METHODS: Age-matched, pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed continuously (21 h/day) to a 60 Hz EMF at field strengths of 0 (sham control), 5, 83.3 or 500 microT from day 6 of gestation through to day 21 of lactation. The experimentally generated magnetic field was monitored continuously (uninterrupted monitoring over the period of the study) throughout the study. RESULTS: No exposure-related changes were found in exposed or sham-exposed animals with respect to the anogenital distance, preputial separation, testis weight, testicular histology, sperm count, daily sperm production, sperm motility, sperm morphology and reproductive capacity of F1 offspring. CONCLUSION: Exposure of Sprague-Dawley rats to a 60 Hz EMF at field strengths of up to 500 microT from day 6 of gestation to day 21 of lactation did not produce any detectable alterations in offspring spermatogenesis and fertility.

Food technology: challenge for health promotion.

The food technology has brought countless benefits to today's food supply. Despite its many positive contributions, it has also brought unintended negative consequences. It is the time to mobilize the food technology to help the food supply more secure, safer and healthier, and here three possible approaches are foreseeable: First, we should continue to improve the conventional technologies. Many wholesome foods have been prepared and preserved using natural materials simply by fermentation. Second, we have to enhance the minimal processing as much as applicable. Third, new ingredients, intelligent packaging and functional foods should be explored to improve food supply and health. Today, consumer interest in the functional foods has been increased tremendously, and the future of food lies in the functional foods. However, the situations in the developing world are different from this. As food resource is limited in this region, food technology has to be emphasized to increase food supply. To help solve such complex problems, not only new technologies, but also conventional technologies have to be mobilized. Simultaneously, even higher technical capabilities have to be built up by applying new findings from the related disciplines to allow the food technology to play its vital role.
