Emergency mental health services during and after a major aircraft accident.

A major commercial aircraft accident mobilizes a sophisticated disaster response by the federal government and local disaster teams. However, there is no effort to deal with the significant mental health needs of survivors, airline crew, ground personnel, and rescuers. The time has come to deal with the human tragedy and its emotional consequences. The development of an emergency protocol for response to mental health crises at the time of an accident must be confronted. An appropriate response on the part of the mental health community must address all persons involved in the accident. Management would involve a relatively brief length of time. Team members can include psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, psychiatric aides, airline representatives, clergy, and other trained personnel. The establishment of such a mental health preparedness program in crisis intervention must be the responsibility of the airlines, federal agencies, and others if the program is to be a success.

Frequency distribution of hospital-referred parasuicidal episodes in Edinburgh.

This paper presents frequency distributions of parasuicidal episodes (suicide attempts) in Edinburgh for four subgroups of people for each of the years 1970, 1973, and 1974. Probability distributions are fitted to these data and it is shown that the log-series distribution best fits the data for two subgroups. The stability of the parameters of these distributions is examined and is demonstrated for two of the subgroups.

Parasuicide in Edinburgh--a seven-year review 1968-74.

Parasuicide admissions to the Regional Poisoning Treatment Centre in Edinburgh are reviewed over the seven year period 1968-74. Special emphasis is given to trends in parasuicide rates for Edinburgh City, but social and clinical data are also described. Though the mean annual increase for admissions is 10-6 per cent, recent years have shown a fall in the rates for men and a levelling off for women. There have been increases in the rates for the young, for men in social classes 4 and 5 and for divorced women, and in poisonings with psychotropic drugs and alcohol consumption among women. At the same time it is important to note variables which have not changed: the relative risks by age and sex, repetition rates, the diagnostic picture, poisoning with non-prescribed drugs, and the rank order of municipal ward rates: and variables which have diminished: the rates for divorced men, overcrowding, domestic gas and barbiturate poisoning, and drug misuse. A comprehensive explanation of parasuicide in the contemporary scene would have to explain both the consistencies and the changing trends. The answer to the central question of why parasuicide is changing remains elusive.

"Special article" in honor of the bicentennial year 1776-1976.

During this bicentennial year it is worthwhile to review the history of children who have suffered from mental illness during the course of America's movement from a small colony to a major "superpower." The lesson to be found in the history of these children suggests that perphaps our major priorities were not the mental health of children. Hopefully America's next bicentennial celebration will reveal a more enlightened attitude and concern for emotionally disturbed children.

Ego strength and confidence thresholds in two methods of paired-associate learning.

Two experiments contrasted the effects of high and low wgo strength (as measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionaire) on confidence thresholds (FG scores) under the anticipation and recall methods. High ego strength resulted in larger FG scores under the anticipation method- weakly so in Experiment I but significantly so in Experiment II, where subjects were selected from greater extremes of ego strength. This inferiority extended to trails to criterion and a measure of the associative-learning stage as well. Tasks for extending the generality of the obtained relationship of ego strength and confidence thresholds in paired-associate learning are suggested.
