Prolongation of murine skin allografts across a major histocompatibility locus using supernatants from con-A activated spleen cells.

Supernatants from Concanavalin A-activated mouse spleen cell cultures have been found to prolong skin graft survival across the H-2 locus in the mouse. There exist in these supernatants non-specific factors synthesized by suppressor T cells which have been activated by sub-optimal concentrations of Concanavalin A in vitro. The possible nature of these factors is discussed.

A review of the relationship between dysphoria, pleasure, and human bonding.

A model is presented which links up recent findings regarding the biochemical substrates of neurological networks mediating pleasure states with the concept of animal behavior relating to bonding. The forms of human bonding (parent-child, kinship, friendship) have analogies in the animal world and appear to be based on a combination of fixed action patterns, learning behaviors supported by endogenous secretion of "pleasure-producing" endorphines, and social reinforcement. The implications of this model for psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation are discussed.

M-plasty techniques.

Conventional closure of surgical defects in skin may cause unsightly protrusions (dog ears). Fusiform excisions with angles of 30 degrees or less reduce protrusion but may require excision of larger volumes and lengths of healthy skin and subcutaneous tissue than may be desirable. M-plasties reduce these requirements while still allowing use of 30 degrees angles at maximum. Applications and technical details are described and illustrated.

HLA-B alleles associated with the B15 serologically defined antigens.

Cells expressing HLA molecules in the B15 family were identified by serologic typing in routine testing of volunteer donors of various ethnic backgrounds for a bone marrow registry. DNA sequencing was used to identify HLA-B15 alleles associated with each serologic type and to examine the diversity within the B15 antigen family. Alleles which appeared predominantly in each B15 serologic cluster included: B15 with no defined serologic subdivision (B*1501), B62 (B*1501), B63 (B*1516, B*1517), B75 (B*1502, B*1521), and B76/77 (B*1513). Other B*15 alleles were also found associated with the serotypes and some of these alleles (e.g., B*1501 and B*1516) were found in two or more serologic clusters illustrating the complexity of this family. The B15 unsplit and B75 groups were the most complex exhibiting 16 and 7 alleles, respectively, within each serotype. Five new B*15 alleles (B*1530, B*1531, B*1533, B*1534, B*1535) and 5 other new HLA-B alleles (B*38022, B*3910, B*4010, B*51012, and B*5108) were also identified.

Establishment of a reference collection of substances and an analytical handbook of reference data to support enforcement of EC regulations on food contact materials.

A collection has been made of monomers and other starting substances that are required as analytical standards for enforcement of European Community legislation on food contact materials. The substances have been analysed by mass spectrometry and appropriate chromatographic methods to indicate the presence of impurities. The collection has been supplemented by a database of infra-red and mass spectra, and a handbook that collates various information to assist enforcement laboratories in the identification of plastics articles and the selection of appropriate methods of analysis where these are available.

Muscle-tendon surgery in diplegic cerebral palsy: functional and mechanical changes.

A prospective assessment of muscle-tendon (M-T) surgery was conducted on 30 patients with spastic diplegia. Muscle-tendon surgery consisted of recessions or releases to improve gait function by correcting restricted joint motion and joint malalignment. Functional-outcome measures included the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) and temporal gait factors. Kinematic gait data were evaluated to determine the mechanical effects. The mean age at surgery was 8.7 years (4-20 years), and 3.5 muscle tendon units per extremity were recessed or released at surgery. The primary kinematic change for the hip and the knee was a shift in the sagittal joint position with minimal effects on overall excursion. Changes in ankle-joint dynamics after gastrocsoleus recessions included a reduction in plantarflexion and a shift in the timing of maximal dorsiflexion to later in stance. Improvements in walking velocity and stride length were evident by 6 month after surgery. Functional changes from M-T surgery included a 25% increase in velocity and an 18% increase in stride length over preoperative values seen at 9 months after surgery. Improvements in these parameters were maintained at 2 years after surgery. The GMFM total score showed minimal change after surgery with improvements occurring primarily in the standing dimension and the walking, running, and jumping dimensions.
