[Shiftwork and quality of life].

The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life of shiftworkers and non-shiftworkers. Satisfaction with various aspects of life and the overall satisfaction were examined by means of the Quality of Life Scale. A total number of 107 chemical industry workers participated in the study, of whom 56 worked shifts and 51 worked regular hours. The results revealed that the average satisfaction with the present job and financial status was lower in shiftworkers than in the non-shiftworkers (P < 0.05). The differences in the two predictors of life quality did not affect the overall satisfaction with life in either group.

[Problems in determining the occupational etiology of liver damage].

Workplaces involving the use of hepatotoxic substances are classified as workplaces with hazardous and/or special working conditions. Rules and Regulations for Workplaces with Special Working Conditions refer to safety measures to be observed both by the workers at such workplaces and by their employers. This paper presents the cases of plaster moulds casters occupationally exposed to chlorine carbohydrates. The employer did not classify those workplaces as workplaces with special working conditions. Liver damage was found in five (of 12) workers. After further examination, two of the five workers were diagnosed to suffer from occupational liver damage. Unable to confirm the etiology of the liver damage, however, a committee appointed for determining occupational disability did not recognize the disease of the two workers as occupational. This example shows the necessity to introduce and perform strict control of technological processes and working conditions. At the same time, accurate assessment of the danger present at the workplace requires preliminary and periodical examination of the workers. This is extremely important today when the necessity of performing such examinations is frequently disputed. It is expected that the compulsory health insurance for occupational diseases imposed on employers will eventually bring medical examination to the deserved place.

[Mortality due to malignant tumors in children and adolescents in Belgrade 1980-1993].

In the period 1980-1993, in Belgrade, malignant tumors of the age group up to 24 years were 1.2% of the mortality structure of all cancers. The average standardized mortality rate (world standard population) of all cancers was 7.0 per 100,000 with a decreasing trend. In childhood and adolescence period, hematological malignancies (42.0%), brain tumors (23.0%) and soft tissue and bone tumors (10.5%) were the most frequent cancers for the observed period. The average standardized mortality rates for leukemia was 1.1/100,000, for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas 0.2/100,000 and -1.7/100,000 for Hodgkin's disease. The elevated mortality rates were registered for leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, whereas a marked decreasing trend was present for Hodgkin's disease. For brain malignant tumors and soft tissue and bone tumors, a decreasing mortality rates were also observed.
