Microsurgery in anterior approach to cervical discs.

Removal of intervertebral discs and osteophytes with the aid of an operating microscope was performed in ten patients suffering from cervical spondylotic radicular or radiculomyelopathic syndromes, using an anterior approach. The method permits more complete removal of disc, posterior and lateral osteophytes, without the necessity of drilling or otherwise injuring the vertebral bodies. In five patients, a bone graft was inserted into the vacated space after disc removal. Clinical improvement in most cases was immediate and maintained during a two and a half year follow-up.

Creutzfeldt-jakob disease: focus among Libyan Jews in Israel.

A countrywide search for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Israel disclosed 29 cases with onset between 1963 and 1972. Incidence in various ethnic groups varied in the narrow range of 0.4 to 1.9 per million population except among Jewish immigrants from Libya, among whom the incidence was 31.3 per million. An extraordinary excess of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease exists in this ethnic group.

Subacute spongiform encephalopathy and its relation to Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease: report on six cases.

An account is given of six cases of Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease confirmed at necropsy. The rapid fatal outcome within three months was typical of the variety designated subacute spongiform encephalopathy (Nevin-Jones). The characteristic EEG changes were found to be of great value in making an early diagnosis and, together with akinetic mutism and myoclonus, constituted an easily recognizable picture. Treatment with idoxyuridine was ineffective in one case in which electronmicroscopy of brain biopsy material supported the diagnosis.

Subacute spongiform encephalopathy. Electron microscopic studies.

Electron microscopic changes in brain biopsies from two cases of subacute spongiform encephalopathy are described. Large vacuoles seen in astrocytic and neuronal processes were surrounded by one or more concentric membranes. Dense-core vesicles were found in axonal endings and in nerve cell perikarya; these particles could represent catecholamine-containing vesicles.
