Sonographic urethrography is used as a new tool in understanding urethral pathology. Although a prospective study is necessary to demonstrate it, this examination seems to be complementary to retrograde Urethrography.
The authors report their early experience with ND-YAG laser in 55 patients treated for superficial bladder or urethral tumors and for urethral stenosis. The advantage of the technique (local anesthesia, shorter hospitalization) and the disadvantages (cost, duration, unsatisfactory results in urethral stenoses) are discussed.

Transabdominal, transrectal and transurethral ultrasonography play a major role in the diagnosis and staging of urological tumors. The practical limitations and possibilities of the several techniques are evaluated in the oncological work-up of tumors of the kidney, bladder, seminal vesicles, prostate and testis. Ultrasonography has become an important diagnostic tool in urological oncology.

Real time ultrasound technology is basically performed by three different techniques: transabdominal sector scan; transrectal radial scan, and transurethral radial scan. This review, based on 7 years of experience on more than 2,500 patients, compares the usefulness and limitations of these techniques in the diagnosis of lower urinary tract pathology. Transabdominal ultrasound is used for general evaluation of the lower urinary tract and the determination of residual urine. Transrectal ultrasound determines prostatic mass, diagnoses early prostatic cancer and evaluates exact staging of prostatic cancer and pathology of the seminal vesicles. Transurethral ultrasound is the best technique for preoperative staging of bladder cancer.
