Cardiotoxicity as a result of 5-fluorouracil therapy.

We report the case of a patient bearing a sigmoid colon carcinoma, stage IV, who after 11 months of antiblastic therapy, having completed a dose of 81,000 mg of 5-FU and CCNU, suffered a myocardial infarct. We attribute this complication to 5-FU. Due to the fact that the coronary angiogram did not confirm the arteriosclerotic nature of the lesion, we suggest that it could have been caused by an endoarteritis, resulting from an immuno-allergic or toxic cumulative process.

[Tracheal diverticuli: apropos of a case: malformation etiopathogenesis?].

A case of 3 contiguous diverticula of the right posterior wall of the upper trachea is reported. The earlier literature on this subject and the different classifications described are studied. Congenital genesis of the tracheal diverticula is suggested by their localisation and histologic bronchial elements, and by embryogenesis and anomalies of the trachea. They are presumed to correspond to a rudimentary, extra, apical bronchis.

ATP-gamma-S (adenosine 5'-0(3-thiotriphosphate)) blocks progesterone-induced maturation of the Xenopus oocyte.

ATP-gamma-S microinjection into Xenopus oocyte prevents progesterone induced maturation. Inhibition is time and dose dependent; 50% inhibition occurs when 50 nl of 0.5 mM ATP-gamma-S solution are microinjected/oocyte 1 hr prior to the hormonal trigger. ATP-gamma-S inhibited oocytes can be induced to mature (100%) following microinjection of extracts containing maturation promoting factor (MPF). Our results suggest that the maturation protein(s) has been stabilized in ovo by ATP-gamma-S microinjection, in its phosphorylated inhibitory form.

A radio-anatomical study in vivo on pancreatic ducts.

Pancreatography using fibroscopy is current practice in medicine and contributes to the diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas. The radiographic images obtained generally represent oblique projections which have little in common with classic anatomical diagrams. An analysis of 60 pancreatographic investigations considered normal (out of a series of 400 investigations made on various diseases of the pancreas) has been followed by a comparison between these radiographic results obtained in vivo with diverse anatomical classifications in current use. The conclusion is reached that pancreatography is morphologically reliable and that there is no correlation between the mode of ramification of the ducts and pathological conditions (with the exception of the pancreas divisum and the annular pancreas).

Calcium sequestering activities of reticulum vesicles from Xenopus laevis oocytes.

Membrane vesicles isolated from Xenopus laevis full-grown stage VI and mature oocytes accumulate 45Ca in the presence of ATP and oxalate. The Ca2+-pumping activity measured in vitro does not appear to be modified during meiotic maturation; it is not affected by the complex Ca2+-calmodulin. Preliminary experiments have shown that the addition of Na+ (30 mM) rapidly discharges accumulated 45Ca into oocyte vesicles indicating that a Na+/Ca2+ exchange system occurs in this membrane fraction. During progesterone-induced maturation, the different intracellular membranes undergo morphological changes. We suggest that intracellular movement of membrane vesicles could be involved in the local regulation of Ca2+ levels.

[A 45 kDa phosphorylated protein, resistant to alkaline treatment, appears at the time of rupture of the nuclear envelope during the 1st meiotic division of the Xenopus oocyte].

Xenopus oocytes were prelabeled with 32PO4 and induced to mature by progesterone treatment (1 microM). At the time of the breakdown of the germinal vesicle (nucleus), an alkali stable 45 kDa phosphoprotein appears in the 165 000 X g oocyte supernatant. Phospho-amino acid analysis shows that the 45 kDa protein is phosphorylated at threonine residues.
