Complement elevation in spinal cord injury.

Laboratory studies revealed an elevated complement in 66% of patients with spinal cord injury. It is postulated that the activated complement may be a component of self-feeding immunological mechanism responsible for the failure of regeneration of a mature mammalian spinal cord. There was no evidence that such an injury had any effect on pre-existing atopy.

Histamine flare, a neurovascular response.

It has been shown that the histamine flare depends on the integrity of sympathetic innervation and of connecting pathways between the sympathetic nervous system and higher centers. This conclusion was reached on the basis of lack of skin responses to exogenous histamine in 75% of patients with spinal cord injury in this study.

Establishing a service mark on Team Medicine (SM), the hospital employs graphic ads that tell true stories of recovery and cure, quoting several doctors as well as the patients.

Big community outreach program successful at Memorial Hermann.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare formed a partnership with Southern Bell Co. that helps it to reach the attention of newcomers in fast growing Houston. Once people join the non-profit hospital's free medical benefit membership programs, they enjoy a number of hospital-related perks, including free private room upgrades when hospitalized.

CHW Bay region takes a giant step toward unifying diverse audiences.

The Bay Region, Catholic Healthcare West, had the dual challenge of marketing a new entity and reaching a highly diverse audience. A relationship with the San Franscisco Giants proved to be one unifying force, which is emphasized in a sophisticated multi-media approach.

Connecticut Children's Medical Center multi-year branding campaign.

As the only children's hospital in the state, Connecticut Children's Medical Center was challenged by the inherent complacency of parents. It met the challenge through a multi-level marketing effort which included television and radio, community outreach and strong media relations. By emphasizing the unique nature of children, the campaign affirms the need for a specialized children's health center.

Among specialty hospitals, three for children take the honors. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia heads the parade.

Children's hospitals captured the honors in the specialty hospital category. They are: The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, first place; Valley Children's Hospital, Madera, Calif., second place; and Children's Hospital of Orange County, Orange, Calif., third place. All of the reports used colors that helped create an upbeat, youthful appearance.
