Genetic differences between Solomon Islander populations are distinguishable on the basis of melanosome packaging in epidermal keratinocytes. By electron microscopic study of skin pigmentation in various Melanesian populations, we have found distinct inter-island differences in the mode of melanosome packaging. Melanosomes are found as singlets in the skin of Bougainville Islanders but are found aggregated in melanosome complexes in Malaita Islanders and Ontong Javanese. This variation in melanosome packaging represents an important biologic difference found between Solomon Islanders and may reflect the genetic diversity existing in the original Melanesian founding population or the genetic diversity existing in the original Melanesian founding population or populations.

This paper reports the findings of genetic variation in eight populations of the Solomon Islands. Blood specimens collected from 345 Aita, 191 Nasioi and 416 Nagovisi of Bougainville, 379 Lau, 453 Baegu and 385 Kwaio of Malaita, and 504 Ontong Java, and 328 Ulawa subjects were tested for A-B-O, M-N-S-s, Rh, Hp, Tf, secretor, and red-cell acid phosphatase systems. Considerable differences were found among the eight populations with respect to all polymorphic systems studied. It was not possible to distinguish Austronesian groups from non-Austronesian groups on the basis of gene frequencies.

The number of epidermal appendages and melanocytes in forearm skin of three groups of Solomon Islanders has been determined. There were no significant differences in the number of hair follicles or sweat ducts among Solomon Islander groups, nor between them and a Caucasian group used for comparison. The Nasioi and Kwaio, however, do have a significantly higher melanocyte population than Caucasian groups. This difference may in part be due to the exposure of the Solomon Islander skin used in this study to chronic solar radiation.

Whether boarding schools undermine the mental health of Eskimo and Indian children has been a bitterly debated issue. The authors examined the effects of four representative boarding schools on 132 Alaskan Eskimo adolescents during their freshman and sophomore years. Forty-nine percent of the freshmen developed school-related social and emotional disturbances; 25% of these problems were judged serious. High levels of emotional disturbance were also found during the students' sophomore year. Although simple environmental changes may temporarily reduce the rate of disturbance among students, the long-term effects of boarding schools may still be deleterious.
Corticosteroid inhibition of mitogen induced lymphocyte transformation was studied in patients with definite or suspected primary open-angle plaucoma (POAG). Patients without glaucoma served as normal controls. From a dose response curve with prednisolone-21-PO4 or prednisolone the value of 50% inhibition (I50) was determined for each patient. In Series I it was necessary to disqualify 70% of the data whereas in Series II less than 5% were excluded. In Series I the median I50 (M X 10(-8) prednisolone-21-PO4) was 12 for 11 controls and 8 for 18 total POAG'S (p less than .01). In Series II the opposite result was obtained. The median I50 was 8 for 49 controls and 12 for 79 total POAG'S (p less than .01). In series II similar results were obtained with prednisolone. There was no difference between definite and suspected glaucoma patients. The cause of the discrepancy between the present two series and among the other published studies is not clear. The source of normal controls, from either an eye clinic or volunteer groups, may be a factor.
