[The syndrome of ovarian hypoplasia].

The authors, on the basis of broad and endocrinological studies and of histological investigation of the ovaries, performed in 21 women, described an uniform disease picture which allowes to delimit ovarian hypoplastic syndrome out of a group of patients with ovarial insufficiency. This syndrome is characterized by primary or secondary amenorrhoea, normal height, weak development of secondary sexfeatures, and by small ovaries which have the oval or roller, more seldom ball-like or streaking form. The histological picture of the ovaries consist of fibrous stroma without generative elements or with a small number of primary follicles, but sometimes also with single growing Graaf's follicle. The excretion of estrogens is very low and in the case of gonadotrophins it increases.

Partial deletion of long arm of chromosome 17: a specific abnormality in acute promyelocytic leukemia?

Two patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia had an identical chromosomal abnormality detected by fluoresecence banding. In each case, the clinical course was rapidly fatal, and was characterized by a lack of response to chemotherapy with cytarabine and thioguanine, and was complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation. Bone marrow cells from each patient contained 46 chromosomes; in each instance, however, one chromosome 17 had a deletion of almost one half of the proximal portion of the long arm [del(17)(q11q21 or 22)].

Immunochemical and functional similarities and differences among iron-sulfur proteins involved in mammalian steroidogenesis.

An antibody prepared against bovine adrenodoxin has been employed to study possible similarities or differences among the iron-sulfur protein components of electron transport sequences associated with cytochrome P-450 function in the mitochondria of mammalian steroidogenic tissues. Although they are not identical, the "adrenodoxins" in mitochondria from the adrenals of a number of species, including man, are both immunochemically and functionally similar. The ability of the antibody to inhibit adrenal 11 beta-hydroxylase and cholesterol side-chain cleavage activities demonstrates the requirement for adrenodoxin in these mixed-function oxidations. The results presented also demonstrate the immunochemical and functional similarities among the iron-sulfur proteins which are involved in the oxidative cleavage of the cholesterol side-chain occurring in adrenal, ovarian and testicular mitochondria. The iron-sulfur protein involved in cholesterol side-chain cleavage activity in term placental mitochondria, however, appears to be immunochemically different from these other proteins.

[Cytogenetic studies in primary amenorrhea].

Cytogenetic analysis in 125 women with primary amenorrhea consisting of determinations of sex chromatin and karyotype, and in some cases of autoradiography were performed. On the basis of clinical, endocrinologic and cytogenetic criteria, the women were divided into ten clinical groups. In Turner's syndrome 45,X monosomie was observed only in 9 patients and in the remaining 12 cases varies types of mosaicism or of structural aberrations of the X chromosome. In pure gonadal dysgenesis, the patients exhibited 46,XY karyotype have the tendency to malign tumors of the gonads. In all cases with male pseudohermaphroditism the karyotypes 46,XY were observed. The remaining patients with primary amenorrhea exhibited 46,XX karyotype and belonged to the cases with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kustner syndrome, with adrenogenital syndrome, with hypoplasia of the ovaries, with primary amenorrhea of uterine or pituitary origin or at last with pubertas tarda.
