Metabolic levels in dogfish gill tissue after zinc treatments.

Dogfish were subjected to acute (80 ppm/24 hours) and subacute (10 ppm/21 days) zinc treatments before measuring the ATP, glycogen, protein, and lactate levels. Acute treatment varies significantly the levels of all the metabolites tested while only protein content is significantly lower after subacute treatment. The results are discussed in relation to the hypoxia effect produced by the metal and the related responses of the fish.

Corticoadrenal and behavioral response to open field in pairs of male rats either familiar or non-familiar to each other.

The effect of the presence either of a familiar or non-familiar conspecific animal on serum corticosterone and some behavioral responses in the open field was studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals tested in presence of a familiar animal showed a higher corticosterone response and a higher defecation rate. It suggests that rats experienced more emotional reactivity in presence of a familiar animal than in presence of a non-familiar one. Time spent in social interaction was higher in non-familiar pairs; however, ambulation and rearing were lower, suggesting competition between social investigation and novel environment exploration.

Sequential evaluation of general immunocompetence in gynecologic cancer.

A sequential evaluation of general immunocompetence was performed in 70 previously untreated patients with gynecologic cancer. Immunologic evaluations were made prior to any therapy and repeated every 3-4 months for 3 years or until patients died of disease. Cell-mediated immunity was investigated by delayed hypersensitivity to intradermal skin test antigens (STA) and by contact sensitization to 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB). Serum immunoglobulin determinations were performed to evaluate humoral immunity. Compared with age-matched controls, there was impairment of cell-mediated response to both STA and DNFB in patients with locally invasive and disseminated cancer but not in those with preinvasive cancer. There was a progressively impaired reactivity with clinical progression of disease independently of histological type of neoplasm. Sequential evaluations revealed that variations in immune reactivity occurred that also correlated with the patient's clinical course. Significant changes in immunoglobulin levels, an increase in IgG and IgA, and a decrease in IgM, were observed in the cancer groups as compared with age-matched healthy female controls. However, neither initial values nor sequential determinations of immunoglobulins were related to the clinical course of gynecologic cancer.

Prolactin in the evaluation of luteal phase in infertility.

Hyperprolactinemia was detected in 15 of 130 infertile patients (11.5%) with regular menstrual cycles and no galactorrhea who underwent luteal phase evaluation by basal body temperature (BBT), plasma estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P) determination, and endometrial biopsy (repeated in a later cycle when the first was defective). Luteal phase length and plasma levels of P and E2 were similar in the hyperprolactinemic and normoprolactinemic patients. Moreover, a significantly higher incidence of inadequate luteal phase, histologically documented, was found in the normoprolactinemic group. It is concluded that the usefulness of plasma prolactin (PRL) determination in the evaluation of luteal function in infertility is scanty and that most histologically documented cases of luteal phase defects occur with euprolactinemia.

Dehydrogesterone treatment of endometrial luteal phase deficiency after ovulation induced by clomiphene citrate and human chorionic gonadotropin.

Twenty infertile patients being treated with clomiphene citrate (CC) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) for induction of ovulation, with a defective endometrial secretory pattern despite normal plasma levels of progesterone, estradiol, and prolactin, were entered into treatment plans on a random basis involving the following: CC-hCG plus dehydrogesterone (group 1), and CC-hCG (group 2). Success rates were similar in both groups (20% and 30%, respectively), based on a corrected endometrial defect during the second treated cycle. It is concluded that progestational agents are of low therapeutic value in endometrial luteal phase deficiency induced by CC.

The effect of conspecifics on corticoadrenal response of rats to a novel environment.

The effect of housing conditions and the presence of a conspecific on corticoadrenal response to a novel environment was studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The response to a novel environment was the same in rats housed in groups and rats housed alone for 20 days before testing, suggesting that isolation during adulthood did not affect corticoadrenal response to a novel environment. The presence of a nonfamiliar rat (proceeding from another home cage) did not modify corticoadrenal response to the novel environment but the presence of a rat proceeding from the same home cage induced a higher corticoadrenal response to this stressful stimuli. These results can be explained considering that rats exhibit greater emotional reactivity, as measured by adrenal function, in situations which combine familiar (the other rat) and novel (the box) elements than those completely unfamiliar.

Luteal phase evaluation after clomiphene-chorionic gonadotrophin-induced ovulation.

Fifty infertile patients treated with clomiphene and hCG for induction of ovulation were studied with plasma progesterone measurement and endometrial histology. Five patients (10%) presented defective endometria and low plasma progesterone in spite of biphasic BBT charts with normal luteal phase length. Forty-five patients (90%) had significantly higher plasma progesterone concentrations than those found in a control group of fertile women, but a defective endometrial secretory pattern occurred in 19 of these 45 patients (42.3%). These data suggest the need for monitoring the response to clomiphene by endometrial histology in addition to BBT and plasma progesterone, or for supplemental therapy to overcome the endometrial luteal phase deficiency in clomiphene-treated cycles.

Effect of chronic noise or water restriction on weight of body and organs in the rat.

The effect of either chronic noise or water restriction on body weight gain and weight of several glands and organs has been studied in male Wistar rats. The results indicate that chronic noise does not affect the relative weight of glands and organs but it induces a slight decrease in body weight gain. Water restriction provokes a strong decrease in body weight gain and relative weight of the liver while it increases significantly the relative weight of other glands and organs as a likely consequence of the decrease in body mass. Chronic noise does not seems to be a strong stress and it markedly differs from water restriction which is not appropriate as a model of chronic stress.

Oxygen consumption of the dogfish gill tissue following zinc treatment.

1. Oxygen consumption of the dogfish gill tissue has been determined by manometric techniques following different treatments with zinc sulphate. 2. Exposure of the animals to subacute and acute zinc concentrations affects gill tissue respiration. 3. No significant differences in oxygen consumption were found between subacutely treated fish (10 ppm for 4 and 21 days) ad 80 ppm (LC50 48hr) for 24hr exposed animals. 4. Fish treated with 175 ppm (LC50 24hr) for 14 hr greater inhibition of gill tissue respiration than subacutely treated animals. 5. Results are discussed in relation to Zn accumulation in the gill system following the same treatment with zinc sulphate.

Dehydrogesterone versus vaginal progesterone in the treatment of the endometrial luteal phase deficiency.

Forty-four infertile patients with inadequate luteal phase histologically documented in at least two separate cycles and normal plasma levels of progesterone (P), estradiol (E2), and prolactin (PRL) were entered into treatment plans on a random basis involving at least 3 months of each of the following: P vaginal suppositories, dehydrogesterone, and no treatment. Success rates were similar for P (62.5%) and dehydrogesterone (68.7%), based on a corrected endometrial defect during the fourth treated cycle or when a term pregnancy was achieved. However, these figures are significantly different (P less than 0.001) when compared with 16.6% of the control group. In ten additional infertile patients with normal luteal function as assessed by endometrial histologic study and hormone measurements, a second biopsy was performed in a consecutive cycle under dehydrogesterone administration. In no case was the normal secretory pattern impaired. It is concluded that (1) both P and dehydrogesterone can be used to advantage in the treatment of luteal phase defects, and (2) therapy with dehydrogesterone does not alter the normal pattern of endometrial secretion.

Luteal phase in infertility: problems of evaluation.

This study was undertaken to examine the endometrial data in 200 infertile women whose three progesterone estimations per cycle totaled over 15 ng/ml when taken from 11 to 4 days preceding menstruation. Forty-three patients (21.5%) showed defective endometria in two separate cycles. No difference was found when plasma progesterone concentrations in this group were compared with those of the remaining 157 infertile patients with normal endometria. Further, plasma progesterone in infertile women (both groups) was similar to a control group of 12 fertile women with normal secretory endometria. Endometrial biopsy is essential in the evaluation of luteal function in infertility and cannot be totally replaced by the use of plasma progesterone in three samples during the luteal phase since it failed to detect as much as 21.5% of abnormal secretory phases.

Oxygen uptake by dogfish gill tissue after several in vitro zinc treatments.

Oxygen consumption by dogfish gill tissue is measured after several in vitro zinc treatments ranging from low contamination (0.2 ppm) to the 50% lethal concentration at 24 hours (180 ppm). Zinc inhibits respiration from 15 ppm and the inhibition increases along with greater zinc concentrations from 15 to 60 ppm. Thereafter the respiration level becomes stabilized with no further inhibition increases. A similar pattern is described with homogenates but inhibition is stronger and faster, while respiration does not stabilize. The results are discussed in relation to the possible role of the membrane and the toxicological effects caused by zinc.

Abortion may sensitize the mother to HLA antigens.

The incidence of cytotoxic antibodies in relation to histories of abortions was analyzed in sera from 474 nulliparous pregnant women. In patients with previous spontaneous abortions, there is a higher incidence of positive sera than in primigravidae. Furthermore, patients with two or more prior abortions show a greater incidence of cytotoxic activity in their sera than women who have had only one abortion.
