A new gamma chain of human fetal hemoglobin, the M gamma chain, has been detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is characterized by a Leu----Met replacement at position gamma 141; no other structural variations have been found. The M gamma chain has been observed in red cell lysates of subjects with a heterozygosity for one of many types of hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH), in sickle cell anemia, and in a few cord blood samples. At present, the genetic cause of this newly discovered heterogeneity is not known; an infidelity in translation or the existence of an unrecognized gamma globin gene should be considered.

In the current debate about causes and cures for poverty, much attention is given to women. Women are more likely than men to be poor, and once impoverished, to remain poor for longer periods of time than do men. In addition, a much greater responsibility for raising the next generation of adults belongs to poor women than to poor men. No individual policy response will alleviate poverty among women. Rather, a multi-faceted policy response that recognizes the wide diversity of their situations is necessary. This paper describes the diversity among poor women and suggests a series of appropriate policies.
The principal finding in this study of 151 cases of herpes zoster in a rural practice was the predominance of patients who had a lesion on the right side. This supports the proposition that the site of occurrence may be determined by repeated trauma. The decline in the frequency of attacks in older men was significant. Studying these cases and published reports has elucidated some of the problems of the occurrence and distribution of herpes zoster in the body, which still await definition. Others may be encouraged to carry these studies further.
Almost 10 years ago we reported in this journal the characterization of Hb Hacettepe or alpha 2 beta (2)127(H5)Gln----Glu. Unfortunately, we have to conclude that the original characterization of this Turkish variant was in error. The corrected data are presented in this short communication. The variant (alpha 2 beta (2)65(E9)Lys----Met) was (re)named Hb J-Antakya, after the city where the family resides. An abnormal Hb, observed in a Spanish family and named Hb Complutense, had the beta 127 Gln----Glu substitution, erroneously assigned to the Turkish variant.
A frameshift mutation, arising from the deletion of any one of nine consecutive cytidines in the region of Py DNA encoding both the midregion of large T-Ag and the C-terminal region of middle T-Ag, yields unstable flat cell revertants that synthesize two novel viral proteins in which shuffling of the different domains of the Py T-Ags has occurred. The first protein (37 kd) is a hybrid containing the N-terminus of large T-Ag and the hydrophobic C-terminus of middle T-Ag. The latter domain is responsible for membrane association, even in the 37 kd hybrid protein. The second protein (43 kd), which contains the N-terminal 75% of middle T-Ag, has an associated protein kinase activity and forms a complex with c-src, but cannot induce a transformed phenotype.
A description is given of clinical observations over a period of 25 years for a 26-year-old white male with a heterozygosity for the beta-chain variant, Hb Bicêtre, in which beta 63His is replaced by Pro. The variant was identified through analysis of tryptic peptides from a digest of the beta X-chain isolated by PCMB precipitation and purified by chromatography. Similarity between the clinical histories of the first (French) heterozygote and our patient was most striking, including improvement after splenectomy.
