The effects of adrenergic and cholinergic agents as well as the effects of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) on the levels of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP in mouse lung fragments were studied. Levels of cyclic AMP were enhanced by two of the known beta-adrenergic agonists, epinephrine and isoproterenol. This increase was abolished by propanolol, a recognized beta-adrenergic antagonist. Disodium cromoglycate, a proposed inhibitor of phosphodiesterases, alone caused a slight, significant increase in cyclic AMP. However, in the presence of epinephrine, levels of cyclic AMP were potentiated by DSCG. DSCG behaves, therefore, as a typical cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Cyclic GMP levels were increased by carbachol, acetylcholine, and the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, aminophylline, but not by DSCG, or beta-adrenergic agonists.
A case of mesenteric vascular injury secondary to nonpenetrating steering wheel abdominal trauma is presented. Unique to this report is the presentation of blunt abdominal trauma as acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding with demonstration of the lesion preoperatively via selective celiac and superior mesenteric arteriography.
The mouse ear G2 mitosis assay was modified for the screening of potential antimitotic agents. An inhibitory adrenergic influence, which maintains mitotic rate at a normally low level, was removed by pretreatment of mice with reserpine. This depletes endogenous catecholamines, produces a state of enhanced mitotic activity, and makes the epidermal cells particularly sensitive to mitotic inhibition by agents which elevate the levels of cyclic AMP. Isoproterenol [IC 50 approximately 1 X 10(-9) M], prostaglandins, dibutyryl cyclic AMP [IC 50 approximately 2 X 10(-5) M], papaverine, theophylline and 5' AMP were inhibitory in the assay, whereas dibutyryl cyclic GMP and the cholinergic stimulator carbamylcholine either stimulated or had no effect on mitosis. Epidermal growth factor was employed as an alternate means of stimulating cell division. Skin fron newborn mice or rats pretreated with this substance had increased epidermal mitotic activity which was inhibited cyclic AMP elevators.
The major protein in beta nerve growth factor preparations, beta1NGF, is a dimer in which both peptide chains have COOH-terminal arginine residues. Digestion of beta1NGF with carboxypeptidase B produced a dimer, beta3NGF, in which both chains lack these terminal arginine residues. Exposure of mixtures of beta1 and beta3NGF dimers to 8 M urea to produce monomers, followed by removal of urea to allow recombination, resulted in the formation of the hybrid beta2NGF, comprising one arginine-containing and one arginine-less chain, as well as the parent dimers. The amount of the three dimers formed was close to that expected from random association of monomers. Hybrid beta2NGF was also formed from mixtures of beta1 and beta3NGF where incubated at pH 2.6 to 4.5. The formation of beta2NGF has a half-time of 6 h at pH 4.0 and 4 degrees C. Its rate of formation decreased above pH 4.5, becoming minimal between pH 9.5 and pH 10.5, and increased with increasing temperature. The amount of beta2NGF formed was determined by the lowest pH to which the parent mixture was exposed, irrespective of its prior history. These data suggest that the hybrid is formed by the same mechanism in the absence and presence of the urea step. An approximate value for Kd, the equilibrium dissociation constant of the dimer equilibrium monomer equilibrium was derived. Its value was 3 - 10(-10) M at pH 4.0 and 4 degrees C. The alpha-subunit of 7S NGF decreased the rate of formation of beta2NGF not only at pHs where an alphabeta complex is stable, but also at an acid pH where no complex formation is observed by sedimentation analysis, suggesting that the present methodology offers a more sensitive probe of subunit interactions. In contrast, the gamma subunit and a number of indifferent proteins had little or no effect on the appearance of beta2NGF at the pHs studied.

"Single shot" magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion imaging was used to study the details of signal decay curves in experimental perturbations of cerebral perfusion induced by hypercapnia or death. Despite large perfusion increases observed with dynamic susceptibility-contrast MR imaging, no correlation with these changes was seen in either the diffusion coefficient or any other intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) model parameters in dog gray matter as arterial carbon dioxide pressure increased. Non-monoexponential signal decay in cat gray matter was seen both before and after death. In addition, cat gray matter demonstrated a steady decrease in the diffusion coefficient after death. These data are strong evidence that the fast component of the non-monoexponential diffusion-related signal decay is not due solely to perfusion. The authors believe that a second compartment of nonexchanging spins, most likely cerebrospinal fluid, accounts for the non-monoexponential decay.
BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined growth data from adolescent girls in Latin America and almost none have been conducted in Nicaragua. Thus this study examines growth data from Nicaraguan adolescent girls. AIM: This study describes cross-sectional growth data from a sample of Nicaraguan girls. These data are compared with data from Mexican-US and Guatemalan girls. It is hypothesized that (a) Mexican-US and Guatemalan wealthy ladina girls will show better indicators of nutritional status when compared with the Nicaraguan girls, and (b) the Nicaraguan girls will show similar anthropometric indicators when compared with poor Guatemalan girls. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Anthropometric and age at menarche data were collected from a sample of 154 adolescent girls ages 10-17 years living in Managua, Nicaragua. RESULTS: The findings revealed that these girls are significantly shorter and lighter than US, Mexican-US and wealthy Guatemalan adolescent girls. These girls are also significantly taller and heavier than their poor Guatemalan counterparts. CONCLUSION: This study reveals that the Nicaraguan girls are undernourished when compared with other Latin American girls living in an improved overall environment. The data also reveal that the Nicaraguan girls have better indicators of nutritional status when compared with a cohort of poor Guatemalan girls.

PURPOSE: To develop an instrument to measure the self-care practice of children and adolescents. SUBJECTS: 471 students, age 9-18, in 4th-12th grade. METHODS: This methodological study involved item development and testing the instrument for reliability, readability, and construct validity. FINDINGS: Study findings for the 35-item Child and Adolescent Self-Care Practice Questionnaire included a coefficient alpha of .83 and moderate correlations with two self-care agency instruments. Factors corresponding to the self-care requisites in Orem's model were identified using a LISREL confirmatory factor analysis approach. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: The Child and Adolescent Self-Care Practice Questionnaire can be used in further research to determine how children and adolescents perform as self-care agents. Activities are identified and measured, intervention strategies to improve behaviors can be planned.
Given the urgency of the AIDS crisis, the current emphasis is on prevention of the disease. School-age children may be considered a vulnerable population at risk for future development of HIV infection. Prevention needs to involve educational programs founded on children's knowledge and beliefs about AIDS. Scant literature exists on children's cognition and affective response to AIDS. In this study, 58 school-age children were interviewed to determine their attitudes, beliefs, and emotional response to AIDS. Findings indicate that, in this sample, children had little specific knowledge of AIDS etiology, transmission, or treatment. They expressed negative emotional response to the discussion of AIDS. Health educational programs need to be designed to target children's need for accurate AIDS information that reflects their developmental stage.
