It is well known that Hooke's law for a linearly elastic, isotropic solid may be written in the form of two relations that involve only the spherical or only the deviatoric parts of the tensors of stress and strain. The example of the linearly elastic, transversely isotropic solid is used to show that this decomposition is not, in general, feasible for linearly elastic, anisotropic solids. The discussion is extended to a large class of work-hardening rigid, plastic solids, and it is shown that the considered decomposition can only be achieved for the incompressible solids of this class.

A 76-year-old patient suffering from two painful osteolytic metastases in C1 and C4 underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty by a hybrid technique in a multi-functional image-guided therapy suite (MIGTS). Two trocars were first placed into the respective bodies of C1 and C4 under fluoroscopic computed tomography guidance using a lateral approach. Thereafter, the patient was transferred on a moving table to the digital subtraction angiography unit in the same room for implant injection. Good pain relief was achieved by this minimally invasive procedure without complications. A hybrid approach for vertebroplasty in a MIGTS appears to be safe and feasible and might be indicated in selected cases for difficult accessible lesions.
We describe a lateral transiliac direct puncture approach to the S1 vertebral body for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cementoplasty of painful metastatic lesions. This approach was performed using a 15-cm-long trocar needle with 3-mm outer diameter, introduced under general anesthesia and fluoroscopic control. A lateral projection was used to center the needle just in front of the spinal canal and subjacent to the superior plate of the S1 vertebral body. Needle progression was controlled using anteroposterior and lateral fluoroscopic projections alternately with a needle course parallel to an axial plane, avoiding conflict with the S1 foramen. After needle tip placement in the center of the S1 vertebral body, diluted PMMA with a setting time of 8 min was delivered. Ipsilateral lesions of the lateral sacral compartment were filled with the same needle by stepwise withdrawal and continuous PMMA injection.
Galanin-like immunoreactivity (Gal-LI), as determined by radioimmunoassay, was detectable in the brain and gastrointestinal tract by day 15 of gestation. Concentrations of Gal-LI increased after birth in the hypothalamus but decreased in the stomach and duodenum. A sex difference in Gal-LI concentrations appeared during puberty in the median eminence, neurointermediate lobe, and the anterior pituitary (AP), where females had higher Gal-LI concentrations compared to males. This difference was most pronounced in the AP; adult females had up to 4-fold greater Gal-LI concentrations and 5-fold more abundant rGal-specific mRNA compared to males.
We have examined the pH of the various endosomal compartments in the amoebae of the cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum. This was accomplished both by fluorescence and by in vivo 31P-NMR methods. The fluid-phase marker, fluorescein-labeled dextran, was fed to the amoebae to report the average pH of their endocytic vesicles. During the progressive loading of successive endosomal compartments, we observed an early acidification down to a minimum value of pH < or = 5.3 after 30 min at 20 degrees C followed by an increase to an average pH of 5.8 when all the endosomal compartments were loaded by the fluid-phase marker. The weak fluorescence intensity of FITC-dextran at acidic pH precluded a more detailed investigation and we checked various phosphonate compounds as potential 31P-NMR pH probes for the endosomal compartments. Two molecules, aminomethylphosphonate and 2-aminoethylphosphonate, were selected for this study because of the large amplitudes of their chemical shift variation with pH (2 and 2.5 ppm, respectively) and their acidic pKs of 5.5 and 6.3, respectively. They were only moderately toxic (IC50% approximately 10 mM) towards both the axenic growth and the differentiation program of Dictyostelium amoebae. Internalization of the two aminophosphonates occurred only through the fluid-phase pinocytosis pathway as revealed by the full inhibition of their entry with 1 mM vanadate or 7.5 mM caffeine, two previously characterized inhibitors of endocytosis in Dictyostelium. We found that in vivo 31P-NMR of amoebae suspensions incubated with the aminophosphonates allowed the detection of three distinct intracellular compartments at pH 4.3, 5.8-6.0 and 7.3. Kinetics of aminophosphonate entry were analyzed and the results allowed us to reconstruct the time course for the acidification sequence during endocytosis. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that in Dictyostelium amoebae phosphonates occupy a highly acidic early endosomal compartment (t1/2 = 18 min; pH 4.3) before reaching a less acidic late endosomal/prelysosomal compartment (pH 5.8-6.0) from where they are immediately transported to, and trapped in, the cytoplasm (pH 7.3).
Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurological disorder characterized by progressive chorea, cognitive impairment and emotional disturbance. The disease usually occurs in midlife and symptoms progress inexorably to mental and physical incapacitation. It has been postulated that an excitotoxin is involved in the pathogenesis of HD. Schwarcz and colleagues have shown that quinolinic acid (QA) can produce axon-sparing lesions similar to those observed in HD. The lesions result in a depletion of neurotransmitters contained within striatal spiny neurones, for example gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), while dopamine is unaffected. Recently, we and others have demonstrated that in HD striatum there is a paradoxical 3-5-fold increase in both somatostatin and neuropeptide Y which is attributable to selective preservation of a subclass of striatal aspiny neurones in which these peptides are co-localized. In the present study we demonstrate that lesions due to quinolinic acid closely resemble those of HD as they result in marked depletions of both GABA and substance P, with selective sparing of somatostatin/neuropeptide Y neurones. Lesions produced by kainic acid (KA), ibotenic acid (IA) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (MeAsp) were unlike those produced by QA, as they affected all cell types without sparing somatostatin/neuropeptide Y neurones. These results suggest that QA or a similar compound could be responsible for neuronal degeneration in HD.
Approximately 50,000 abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are surgically repaired annually in the United States. Endovascular grafts (EVGs) combine a stent and a vascular graft offering great potential for reduced morbidity, mortality, and hospital stay because of minimally invasive endoluminal placement through catheters. Because most AAAs extend into one or both iliac arteries, a bifurcated EVG (bEVG) was developed, consisting of a proximal aortic trunk divided into two distinct lumens or sockets to receive two smaller diameter leg (iliac) components. All components were composed of Didcott self-expanding braided wire stents integrally attached to porous spun polycarbonate urethane liners. Successful placement of the bEVGs (trunks 10-12 mm and legs 5-6 mm diameter) by a 10 Fr introducer through the femoral arteries into the infrarenal aorta and external iliac arteries of 9 of 11 dogs was achieved. Subsequently, 11 of 12 bEVGs were successfully placed to exclude a saccular aneurysm exceeding three aortic diameters created by a fascia lata pouch extending from the aorta into the left external iliac artery, of which 7 were patent at 1 to 4 months. These findings establish design feasibility of the bEVG as well as the utility of the canine experimental model.
