Gender role and risk patterns for eating disorders in men and women.

The relationship between gender role and at-risk patterns for eating dysfunction was examined in this study of 206 men and women. The Bem Sex Role Inventory (Bem, 1974) and the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI; Garner, Olmsted, & Polivy, 1983) were the measures used. In accordance with the psychocultural model, it was expected that gender role and gender would interact across the risk factors. An interaction between gender and gender role was found across factors associated with eating disorders: different gender role identities contributed differentially to specific risk factors. The data contribute to a growing body of literature that suggests that the relationship between gender role and eating dysfunction is complex and requires multidimensional conceptualizations.

Spiritual well-being, social desirability and reasons for living: is there a connection?

In order to explore the relationship between spirituality, social desirability, and reasons for living, 100 individuals completed the Reasons for Living Inventory (RFL), the Spiritual Well-being Scale (SWBS) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSDS). Positive correlations were found between religious well-being and the total RFL score and Moral Objections subscale and between existential well-being and several RFL scales. Results indicate that the RFL Moral Objections subscale taps the same type of beliefs as does the SWBS religious well-being subscale. There also appears to be a strong relationship between the adaptive cognitive beliefs which people report as reasons for not considering suicide and their existential beliefs. This emphasises the need for careful assessment of individual needs and beliefs when dealing with suicidal individuals. Areas of concern to the therapist who is working with a suicidal client were not affected by high SD scores.

Applications of magnetic measurements to sediment tracing in urban highway environments.

The use of mineral magnetic techniques for following the transport and sequencing of surface sediments through a separate stormwater system within a small, well defined urban catchment is described. Magnetic characteristics of surface sediments are compared by both graphical representations and by the development of discriminatory equations which show that good differentiation is achieved between highway associated and roof sediments. Below ground deposited sediments and stormwater suspended particulates are assigned to these groupings with the latter showing a more persistent input from roof derived sediments. The variations in source sediment contributions during the progression of storm events are related to hydrological properties and to antecedent conditions.

Sources and storm loading variations of metal species in a gullypot catchment.

The temporal variations of metal species in the outflow from a single gullypot catchment are discussed for two storms with differing hydrological characteristics, and the major contributing sources within the system are identified from an analysis of six discrete storm events. Under low flow conditions the dissolved metals are complexed by organics present in the gullypot liquor and interstitial sediment waters, and the strongly bound fraction predominates in the gullypot outflow. As the flow increases the Chelex removable fraction becomes important due to acid washing initially of road-surface sediments and subsequently of the mobilized gullypot sediments. The particulate-associated metals exhibit distinct temporal similarities to the storm hydrograph and chemograph for suspended solids with the exchangeable fraction being dominant. Hydrodynamic sorting mechanisms on the road surface produce the earlier contributions for this fraction, with later inputs, particularly for Cd and Pb, from chemical exchange processes within overturned gullypot sediment. This basal sediment also provides important inputs of the carbonate and hydrous oxide fraction for Cu and Zn as the gullypot contents become oxygenated later in the storm. The consequences of these findings are discussed in terms of gullypot maintenance and the water quality of stormwater outfalls.

Neonatal maintenance solution--is neonatalyte safe?

Newborns in the neonatal unit at Ga-Rankuwa Hospital who required intravenous fluids were randomly allocated, after 24 hours of life, to receive either Neonatalyte (Sabax) or a control solution. Biochemical monitoring was performed every 12 hours for a period of 5 days. Neonatalyte does not cause hyperkalaemia or hypocalcaemia in the early neonatal period.

Increased plasma concentrations of platelet factor 4 in coronary artery disease: a measure of in vivo platelet activation and secretion.

Previous studies have shown that there is both a significant shortening in platelet survival and a measured hyperactivity to platelet-aggregating agents in patients with documented coronary artery disease compared with control groups. We used a recently described radioimmunoassay for the platelet-secreted protein platelet factor 4 (PF4) to study 162 patients with documented coronary artery disease. There was a significant increase in plasma PF4 concentrations in patients with documented coronary artery disease compared with angiographically normal patients (8.7 vs 16 ng/ml, respectively, n = 121), but as in previous studies of platelet survival, we could not correlate elevated plasma PF4 concentration and the severity or site of the coronary artery disease. In addition, there was no correlation with left ventricular function, serum cholesterol or the type of angina. Patients with confirmed acute myocardial infarction had no significant difference in mean plasma PF4 concentrations compared with similar groups of coronary disease patients who had prolonged chest pain or chronic stable angina. Coronary artery bypass grafting in a subgroup of patients did not affect the mean plasma PF4 concentration during 1 year of follow-up after bypass surgery, but medical therapy for angina with increasing doses of propranolol and nitrates significantly reduced PF4 concentration in another subgroup of patients who were not considered to be candidates for surgical therapy.

Parents' perceptions of their children's death concept.

To examine the differences between parents' and nonparents' beliefs regarding the concept of death in children, 352 individuals answered a demographic survey. Questions concerning beliefs about the age at which children develop the concept of the irreversibility of death were included on the survey. Parents believed that the concept is developed at an earlier age than did nonparents, and also believed that the concept is developed at an earlier age than has been revealed by most research.
