Using available resources to implement research.

Nurses practicing in hospital settings are in a unique position to become involved in research. Day-to-day contact with a variety of patients offers the ideal opportunity to launch an investigation based on actual or potential nursing problems. Often these nurses are not aware of the resources that could help them implement a study that would provide valuable data to staff and others who work with a similar patient population. The purpose of this article is to aid staff nurses in initiating research by discussing resources that may be available within their immediate geographical area.

Theory-based practice in the workplace: the next step.

In this article, an educator and a clinician address issues involved in implementing a course that helped rehabilitation nurses forge the critical link between theory and practice. A combination of strategies was used to present the material in a three-session inservice program.

The rehabilitation clinical nurse specialist of the 1990s: roles assumed by recent graduates.

Since there are a limited number of master's programs that prepare rehabilitation clinical nurse specialists, it was assumed that most or all graduates of such a program newly established at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia would assume positions in traditional rehabilitation settings. A needs assessment completed before the beginning of the program indicated that these facilities needed and definitely would hire graduates as rehabilitation clinical nurse specialists. A follow-up study, consisting of questionnaires sent to the first graduates and their employers, indicated that several had taken roles in areas not considered traditional rehabilitation settings. This article discusses rehabilitation as an umbrella concept and how that concept possibly influenced graduates in assuming their first position after graduation.

Planning for career flexibility.

Evolving changes in the nation's healthcare system are affecting nursing roles at all levels. Nursing and healthcare organizations have responded to these changes with position papers and new directions for education of the healthcare professions. In this article, the author discusses the current changes in the healthcare system that affect the nursing profession and an approach that can be used by nurses who are concerned about the viability of their role in their present position. Nurses are urged to examine their present roles in practice and to adapt to the new system by remaining open to change and becoming knowledgeable about options for change.

Community nursing and rehabilitation nursing using community agencies.

A course of study is proposed for nursing students studying rehabilitation nursing that would use community health settings as clinical sites for the practice of rehabilitation nursing rather than the traditional rehabilitation setting. Suggested community agencies range from a typical community health agency to a shelter for homeless women.
