Difficult diagnoses in blunt thoracoabdominal trauma.

Blunt trauma to the abdomen presents a diagnostic challenge for even the most experienced emergency nurse. Isolated injury to the esophagus, diaphragm, duodenum, or pancreas is indeed rare and, more important, seemingly minor trauma to this region can increase the risk of severe morbidity if these injuries remain undetected. A high index of suspicion and continuous, systematic assessment of the abdomen offer the most effective means of preventing the consequences of delay in diagnosis to any of these organs.

Preparing for hospital site review for trauma center designation: a survey of nurse evaluators.

Trauma nurse experts often are included on the professional teams who survey hospitals for trauma center designation. Evaluation of trauma nursing care includes interviews with staff and review of policies, procedures, and other documents. Medical records are reviewed to validate the verbal reports and examine compliance with protocols. Nursing often provides the "glue" for the system, which integrates medicine, ancillary departments, and administration. Hospitals may use the information gleaned from trauma nurse surveyors to prepare their personnel for a trauma site review.

Use of the hospital postpartum period for population-based research.

A survey method was developed to conduct population-based research on behaviour in pregnancy by contacting women during the postpartum period in hospital. 85.8% of the eligible women completed the questionnaire in hospital, and follow-up measures increased the response rate to the full questionnaire to 90.8%. A shorter version of the questionnaire was completed by another 3.7% of the women for an overall response rate of 94.5%. The test-retest reliability of the questionnaire was high. This method was very acceptable to women. Non-response was due mainly to women who were missed or to lost questionnaires rather than refusal. It is important to have a high response rate on similar surveys since responders did differ from non-responders on important characteristics. This method should prove useful to other health care planners.
