Inhibition of cell-free protein synthesis by analogues of aurintricarboxylic acid.

Aurintricarboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of cell-free protein synthesis by the post-mitochondrial supernatant of chick brain and the translation of mRNA by wheat germ lysate. Comparison of commercially available and chemically synthesized analogues of aurintricarboxylic acid indicates that the unique aurin triphenyl methane ring system and the carboxylic acid groups are both necessary for inhibition of cell-free protein synthesis in both systems.

Analysis of the semantic structures of medical reference languages: part 2. Analysis of the semantic power of MeSH, ICD and SNOMED.

Three medical reference languages, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED), were compared through an analysis of their structures. They were found to differ in the degrees of complexity and specificity of meaning that they could convey. This variation in semantic power has been correlated with their different functions.

Exploitation of medical records.

The difficulties in fully exploiting correct and valid medical data held in a computer system are presented. The requirements for such a system to answer a physician's request are detailed and related to the clinical user, the computer interface and the technological interface, in particular that relating to adequate software. The technical aspects of hardware and software govern the progress of change and a degree of long-term compatibility is required, to ensure adequate exploitation of clinical data. The various economic aspects of such changes are considered including the importance of economy in supporting harmonious technical changes.

Social reinforcement and the naturally occurring social responses of severely and profoundly retarded adolescents.

This study was designed to determine if the deficits in social behavior of retarded persons might be due, in part, to the failure of their environment to maintain that behavior. Using an ABAB design, we systematically ignored severely and profoundly retarded, institutionalized adolescents and gave them social reinforcement for appropriate social behavior. Social behavior decreased during nonreinforcement conditions and increased during reinforcement conditions. The data suggest that deficits in social behavior of retarded persons may be due to failure of their environment to maintain such behavior. Implications of these findings for staff behavior and the utility of the present procedure for increasing social behavior of institutionalized retarded persons were discussed.

A preliminary trial of nifurtimox in the treatment of onchocerciasis.

Nifurtimox tablets were given at a dose of 15-20 mg per kg bodyweight daily for 5 days to 14 patients with onchocerciasis in the savanna of Cameroon. In general the therapy was well tolerated. During the course there were no clinical signs of microfilaricidal effects. 6 patients were re-examined after an interval of 8 months. The microfilarial load had decreased in 3 patients, while it was unchanged in 2, and increased in the last. There was no improvement in ocular lesions. These preliminary results suggest a possible effect on the adult parasite, and further trials are justified.

Pregnancy after jejunoileal shunt.

This report describes an unsuccessful pregnancy after a jejunoileal bypass operation that produced a severe secondary malabsorption syndrome with superimposed mechanical and metabolic effects of pregnancy to which the patient nearly succumbed.

Cancer of the pancreas in blacks: a ten-year experience.

A ten-year retrospective study of cancer of the pancreas in black patients at Howard University Hospital is presented. A total of 68 patients was studied. The authors concluded that no form of treatment had significant effect in terms of survival in stages II, III, and IV disease.

Posterior urethral valves in adults: a report of 2 cases.

Herein we review 2 cases of posterior urethral valves in adults. Significant secondary bladder neck obstruction occurred in both cases and required transurethral incision before the bladder outlet obstruction was relieved. The management is described of the secondary upper tract changes that occurred.

The relative role of "A" level chemistry, physics and biology in the medical course.

The performance of 209 students in the 2nd MBBS, first clinical year and final MBBS examinations has been compared retrospectively with their grades in chemistry, physics and biology at "A" level. The mean grade has also been determined for students from different social classes and secondary education. Significant differences in marks for biology were found between successful and not so successful students, especially in the pre-clinical part of the course. Significnat differences in marks and significant correlations were also found for physics but not to any great extent for chemistry. The relative role of these three basic sciences in the medical course is discussed. The suggestion is made that there is a need for a re-appraisal of the privleged position of chemistry and an unquestioned science requirement for entry to medical school.
