A voltage-sensitive, cation-selective ion channel of Escherichia coli has been reconstituted into liposomes and studied with the patch-clamp method. The single channel conductance was 91 pS in symmetric solutions of 150 mM KCl. Many channels were open most of the time, with frequent brief transitions to closed levels. Multiple conducting units could close and reopen simultaneously, and this apparent cooperativity in gating was increased with depolarizing voltages. Above a voltage threshold, the channels closed irreversibly, often in groups.
We have modified the procedure of Criado and Keller (1987) to study ion channels of Escherichia coli reconstituted in liposomes. The modifications include (a) excluding the use of any detergent and (b) inducing blisters from liposomes with Mg2+. These blisters, which appear to be unilamellar, are stable for hours. They could be repeatedly sampled with different patch-clamp pipettes each achieving seal resistance greater than 10 GOhms. Activities of three types of ion channels are often observed by use of this method, including two voltage-sensitive cation channels of different conductances. Even the mechanosensitive channel, previously recorded from live E. coli cells (Martinac et al., 1987), was also detected in these blisters. Apparently the channel protein and any accessory structures, postulated to be needed for mechanotransduction, can be reconstituted together by this method.
Escherichia coli is attracted to a variety of salts. This attraction is highly reduced in mutants missing a known transducer, the methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein I; there is a smaller role for another transducer, the methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein II. We discuss the relation of salt taxis to osmotaxis.

A 6-kg explosive charge detonated under a seat in the center of a crowded city bus in Jerusalem, killing three passengers immediately. Of the 55 survivors, all of whom were transferred to two major medical centers, 29 were hospitalized. Among those admitted, a high rate of primary blast injuries was found, including perforated ear drums (76%), blast lung (38%), and abdominal blast injuries (14%). Two of the latter patients suffered bowel perforations, which were diagnosed with considerable delay. Eight patients (31%) had sustained life-threatening trauma, consisting of a combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary blast injuries. The overall mortality rate was 10.3%. The large number of primary blast injuries, including the unexpected finding of bowel perforations, is explained by the high amplitude of the air pressure wave (3.8-5.2 atm) and its relatively long duration (2-3 msec) resulting from the detonation of the high-energy explosive charge in the small, enclosed space of the bus. Besides the usual wounds sustained by victims of an explosion that occurs in a confined space, the possibility of primary blast injury to the abdomen and to the lungs should be taken into account by the treating surgeon.

The present study used a 3 X 2 factorial design to investigate effects on assertive behavior and social anxiety of different doses of alcohol and individual differences in female social drinkers. Contrary to previous findings with men, a dose-dependent effect of alcohol was not found during the social interaction task. The high dose had mixed effects, reducing anxiety on some but not other dependent measures. The moderate dose resulted in significantly less assertiveness and increased heart rate during the social interaction, in high-tolerant subjects. Expectancies about intoxication failed to show significant effects. Of the individual difference variables, only acute tolerance significantly influenced alcohol's effects on anxiety. Alcohol did not reduce self-awareness.
The influence of the intensity of passively perceived 1-kHz tones on the latencies and amplitudes of AEP components in the 80- to 200-ms latency range recorded from frontal, central and temporal electrode locations was investigated in healthy adult subjects. At stimulus intensities from 30 to 70 dB SL the latencies of the frontally and centrally recorded N100 and P175 waves decreased, their amplitudes increased. At stimulus intensities from 70 to 90 dB the latencies of N100 and P175 increased, N100 amplitude declined and P175 amplitude increased at a slower rate than between 30 and 70 dB. The latency of the N140 wave recorded at temporal electrode locations decreased markedly with increasing stimulus intensity.
