Blood from carriers of hemoglobin Osler (Hb Osler) had almost the same oxygen affinity as that of carriers of Hb McKees Rocks (Hb MR) (P50 10-11 mm Hg), but Hb concentrations were higher in male carriers of the former (21.6 versus 17.2 g/dl). Two carriers of each Hb were studied to compare their adaptations to altered oxygen affinity and their responses to phlebotomy. All four were healthy, and all excreted normal amounts of erythropoietin. Carriers of Hb MR had somewhat lower mixed venous pO2 than carriers of Hb Osler. There was no suggestion that phlebotomy impaired ability to exercise in either group of patients.
Two normal collie dogs were given 1,200 R total body irradiation followed by successful marrow grafts from their grey collie littermates with cyclic hematopoiesis. During observation periods of 97 and 41 days after grafting, both previously normal recipients showed regular cyclic fluctuations of their granulocyte and reticulocyte counts similar to those observed in their donors. These findings suggest that canine cyclic neutropenia is due to a defect in the marrow stem cell.

The effects of selective spinal cord lesions on the motor evoked potential (MEP) in 21 rats were investigated. No significant change in peak amplitude was observed following lesions of the pyramidal tract. There was a significant decrease in peaks 1 and 2 with ventral funiculi lesions. All 4 peaks of the MEP were significantly reduced following lesions of the lateral funiculus. The most marked decrease in peak amplitude followed lateral funiculi lesions that involved the lateral grey of the spinal cord. In one animal where the lesion was confined to the grey matter in the cord there was a marked decrease in all peaks of the MEP. In 3 additional animals interruption of the descending tracts of the spinal cord via bilateral hemisections of the spinal cord failed to completely abolish the MEP. Increases in peak latency were also noted following spinal lesions. In some animals the increase in latency occurred in the absence of significant peak amplitude changes. The findings in this study refute the previously held position that the MEP in the rat arises from pyramidal tract activation. The role of the reticulospinal and propriospinal tracts in the generation and propagation of the MEP are discussed.
alpha 1-Antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) deficiency may play a role in arterial aneurysmal disease by allowing increased proteolysis of arterial structural proteins. Alpha 1-AT levels are influenced by variation at the PI (protease inhibitor) locus. PI phenotypes were determined in 173 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (77 from Pittsburgh, 96 from London) and in 72 patients with intracranial aneurysms (26 from Pittsburgh, 46 from London). No excess of PI deficiency alleles was observed in either of the aortic aneurysm data sets or in the Pittsburgh intracranial aneurysm data. The PI*Z deficiency allele frequency in the London intracranial aneurysm data was 8-fold higher than in controls; however, this was not significant after correcting for multiple comparisons. PI phenotype had no effect on aneurysm age-at-diagnosis within any of the data sets. Smoking history had an effect on aneurysm age-at-diagnosis only within the Pittsburgh intracranial-aneurysm data.
