Previous reports found the 67Ga scan highly accurate in staging lung cancer. In the present study the cost-effectiveness of the 67Ga scan was measured and compared with that of routine tests (radionuclide liver and bone scans, brain CT scan) used to stage lung cancer. In 160 patients, the 67Ga scan had a lower sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value than the combination of routine tests in detecting metastatic disease. The 67Ga scan was less accurate than the appropriate routine test in establishing the presence of liver, bone, and brain metastases. In the mediastinum the 67Ga scan was not more accurate than the chest radiograph. The average cost to accurately stage a patient by 67Ga scan was $812.12 and by routine tests was $737.60. The cost for metastatic disease was $1,417.70 by 67Ga scan and $1,287.70 by routine tests. It is concluded that at our institution the use of 67Ga scan to stage lung cancer is not cost-effective.
This report describes the history, signs, histopathology, and diagnosis of a delayed neurotoxicity in Suffolk sheep caused by transmission oil. The signs of toxicity included hyperexcitability, a stiff gait, tetraparesis and inability to maintain sternal recumbency. The circumstances involved in exposure to the transmission oil were determined. Histopathology revealed widespread degeneration of axons in the spinal cord, especially their more distal portions.

Five hundred Ga-67 images, requested for detection or follow-up of inflammatory or neoplastic diseases, were reviewed to evaluate the incidence of delayed renal localization and the clinical significance of different degrees of uptake. Renal uptake in 48- or 72-hr images was graded as follows: 0 = background activity; 1+ = greater than background but less than spine; 2+ = close to spine but less than liver; 3+ = same as liver; 4+ = greater than liver. On the 500 images, 996 kidneys were evaluated and among them 600 (60%) had 0 uptake and 340 (34%) had 1+. These 940 kidneys were all considered to be normal. Fifty-six (6%) had 2+ or more uptake, with possible causes for uptake being: infection 27, drug-induced renal damage ten, urinary stasis or slow excretion seven, collagen vascular disease six, renal failure four, acute tubular necrosis one (ATN), and indeterminate one. Cases of renal infection or failure tended to show more or less 4+ uptake, while drug damage, ATN, or urinary stasis tended to have 2+ uptake.

The enzyme cytochemical demonstration of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) with several tetrazolium salts has been studied with an artificial model of polyacrylamide films in corporated with the enzyme, which enabled teh correlation of cytochemical and biochemical data. In the model films no formazan could be produced with BPST and NT in contrast to NBT and TNBT. The reason of this phenomenon is discussed. The concentration of acrylamide strongly influenced the retention of the enzyme activity in the model films. The best results were obtained with a film matrix composed of 12% (w/v) acrylamide plus 0.6% (w/v) bisacrylamide. In this kind of film the retention of the enzyme activity was 59.0 +/- 5.4 (% +/- S.D.; n = 9). It was found that the biochemical and cytochemical (with TNBT) assay as applied to the model films both behave according to the Lambert-Beer law and that there was a high correlation between th biochemical and cytochemical data (r = 0.995).

To evaluate the durability and transfer of enhanced cognitive functioning in the elderly, subjects (ages 64 to 84) who had previously participated in a unidimensional concept identification study were tested on a bidimensional conjunctive concept identification problem. The conjunctive problem was administered approximately 12 mo after completion of the unidimensional study. In the earlier unidimensional study, substantial and equivalent improvement had been found with both a training group and a reinforced training group. In this study, efficient conjunctive problem solving was found with the (unidimensional) training group, showing that enhanced cognitive performance can be durable and transfer to a similar task. Durability and trasnfer were not observed with the (unidimensional) reinforced training group, however, a finding that appears to have resulted from the extrinsic reinforcement token system employed in the unidimensional training with that group.
