The relationship between alcohol attitudes and the personality variables of locus of control and authoritarianism was investigated for a sample of 791 high school students. Authoritarianism was negatively related to indiscriminate attitudes and positively related to responsible attitudes toward alcohol use for both males and females. The locus of control dimension correlated with alcohol attitudes for females only. The findings provide information useful in the identification of adolescents at risk for problematic drinking.

Sixty unpremedicated patients undergoing dilatation and curettage were allocated randomly to receive one of three inhalational agents (halothane, enflurane or isoflurane) to supplement 67% nitrous oxide in oxygen after induction of anaesthesia with methohexitone. Recovery was assessed by the time patients took to open their eyes, to give their correct date of birth, to regain their pre-operative level of manipulative skill with a children's postbox toy, and by comparing pre-operative and postoperative performance of a paper and pencil test (the p-deletion test). There was no difference in the time to open eyes or to regain their pre-operative score with the postbox whether the patients received halothane, enflurane or isoflurane. Patients in the isoflurane group took longer than patients in the enflurane group to give their correct date of birth, but they performed better in the p-deletion test postoperatively, completing more lines with the same number of errors. Patients receiving enflurane committed more errors postoperatively in the p-deletion test. The incidence of complications was low and was not influenced by the choice of inhalational agent.
The performance of the 'Permox' oxygen concentrator has been investigated in detail with particular reference to its possible use as an alternative to conventional oxygen supplies both in the emergency situation, in the event of failure of pipeline or cylinder systems or when these are unavailable. The stability and concentrations of oxygen produced at various flows provided a viable alternative supply of oxygen, and the portability and reliability of this particular apparatus made it suitable for use in the many situations considered.

Thirty-eight high school females who were practicing self-induced vomiting to control their weight were studied. Of these students, 9% practiced self-induced vomiting every time any food was ingested while 40% vomited only after a binge. On standardized measures, 58% of the females had disturbed attitudes toward eating, and 55% met the criteria for being psychologically unhealthy. Of the vomiters identified, 63% indicated that they would stop the practice if another effective method of weight control was available.
A method for measuring inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) by enzymatic generation of NADPH is described. Procedures are given for direct fluorometric assay in the nanomole range and indirect measurement with amplification by enzymatic cycling in the pico- and femtomole ranges. The most sensitive procedure represents a nearly 50,000-fold increase in sensitivity over enzymatic methods now available. Specificity of the assay was greatly enhanced by the use of the antibiotic coformycin, a potent inhibitor of adenosine deaminase (EC 3.5.4.4). This enzyme was found to be a major contaminant of one of the necessary enzymes, phosphoglucomutase (EC 2.7.5.1). The use of the method is illustrated by measurements of IMP in single stimulated and control rat muscle fibers.

This study evaluated the effects of a teacher training program in family life and human sexuality. An attempt was made to determine the extent to which age, sex, race, marital status and years of teaching experience can be used to predict sex-related attitudes of teachers. Teachers who volunteered for a Title IV-C Teacher Training Program in Family Living and Human Sexuality were tested before and after the training program using a knowledge test and an attitude inventory. The pretest and posttest scores of the experimental teachers were compared with a control group to assess the degree of change. Results indicated the teachers who participated in the teacher training program made significant gains in sex-related knowledge. While no changes were evident in overall attitudes, the experimental teachers became more accepting of the practice of masturbation. A major finding in the study was the relationship between age and permissiveness of attitudes toward controversial issues.
This report concerns the results of pathology manpower surveys encompassing responses from four groups of pathologists: (1) solo and group practitioners; (2) training program directors; (3) house staff; (4) diplomates seeking positions. The rate of response by all four groups is judged highly satisfactory. The results show an approximate balance between supply and demand with respect to manpower in pathology. Comparison with the results of two similar surveys conducted by the Joint Task Force shows the following trends: (1) a continued marked reduction of foreign medical graduate (FMG) trainees; (2) continued increase in the proportion of women entering pathology; (3) an increase in the size of the average practice and a corresponding decrease in the proportion of pathologists in solo practice; (4) a decreased tendency of practicing pathologists to relocate; (5) an increase in pathologists lost to the profession because of death, disability and retirement; (6) a slight decrease (approximately 50) in the number of funded full-time positions and a slight increase in the number of part-time vacancies.

Methods for obtaining highly active, exonuclease-free, stable preparations of the Streptomyces albus P restriction enzyme SalPI are described. SalPI and its isoschizomer PstI (from the taxonomically distant Providencia stuartii 164) both cleave their recognition sequence (5'-CTGCAG-3') to generate fragments terminating in tetranucleotide 3' extensions whose sequence is 5'-TGCA-3'. Bacteriophage R4G2 DNA, protected against SalPI cleavage by pregrowth on S. albus P, is also protected against PstI cleavage; and total DNA of both S. albus P and P. stuartii 164 is resistant to cleavage by both enzymes.

Levels of the proposed neurotransmitter amino acids glutamate, aspartate, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and glycine were measured within the layered structures of the olfactory bulb and olfactory cortex following unilateral transections of the lateral olfactory tract or of virtually all fiber tracts of the olfactory peduncle. Distributions of the amino acids on both lesion and control sides were examined and compared by means of a mapping procedure. The results suggest: 1) Glutamate and aspartate are specifically associated with mitral (and presumably also tufted) cell axons and terminals in the piriform cortex. The distribution of aspartate in the olfactory bulb is further suggestive of a specific association of aspartate with mitral cell dendrites and somata. 2) Glutamate might be specifically associated with some centrifugal fibers traveling to the olfactory bulb in or near the anterior commissure. 3) GABA might be specifically related to some certrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulb in addition to its prominent association with granule cells of the bulb. 4) Glycine is unlikely to play a prominent neurotransmitter role in either the olfactory bulb or olfactory cortex.
