[Adrenal glucocorticoid function in rats with various ethanol-induced sleeping time following ethanol administration].

The effect of single and chronic ethanol (Eth) administration (25 % solution, 3.5 g/kg) on functional activity of the hypophyseal-adrenal system in rats with different sensitivity to the hypnotic action of ethanol (short-sleep - SS; non-sleep--NS, long-sleep--LS, intermediate group--IG), was studied. It has been shown that, after a single Eth administration, the concentration of corticosterone (K) in LS rat plasma was 1.5-fold higher than that in the NS animals although it did not differ from the K level in SS and Ig those. After repeated ethanol load, the corticosterone contents in the NS rat blood plasma was 3.5-fold and 4.9-fold lower compared to the control and LS groups, respectively. The data obtained indicate that the SS and LS animals had initially different basal blood plasma glucocorticoid level. The SS animals showed a decreased blood plasma K, whereas the LS ones--an increased one. The features of the glucocorticoid status are suggested to be a factor determining the sensitivity of rats to the ethanol hypnotic effect.

[Diabetogenic action of alloxan in short-term termination of the blood supply to the pancreas and spleen].

It has been shown that the development of alloxan diabetes in rats and the appearance of diabetogenic factor in blood is caused by the direct alloxan action on pancreas and spleen--the organs supplying by blood through the spleen artery. The stopping of blood circulation in that artery preserves rat's organism from the development of general toxic effect of alloxan. The inactivation of alloxan as a diabetogenic agent has been shown after its 5-minute at 37 degrees C incubation with blood. It has been established that the half activity of intravenous injected alloxan disappears in rat's organism during 50 s. and does not depend on alloxan sensitivity of animals.

[Effect of 3-acetylpyridine on the functional activity of the adrenal cortex].

A reduction of blood corticosteroid content was observed in rats blood after the administration of 3-acetylpyridine. The rats given ACTH after 3-acetylpyridine showed a lesser elevation of corticosteroids in the blood and adrenal gland tissue than the intact animals; 3-acetylpyridine diminished the activity of dehydrogenase glucose-6-phosphate in the adrenal glands. The authors suggested that the action of acetylpyridine was realized at the adrenal gland level and consisted in inhibition of the NADP-H2 generation in the dehydrogenase systems.

[Insular system of animals in a chronic heparin deficiency].

The chronic heparin deficiency achieved by long-term treatment (for 3 weeks) with protamine-sulfate is accompanied by the development of stable hyperglycemia, decreased glucose tolerance, and the appearance of insulin resistance. Administration of exogenous heparin promotes the restoration of normoglycemia.

[The functional activity of the adrenocortical system and the transcortin-binding capacity of the blood plasma in rats during the development of tolerance to the narcotic action of ethanol].

Corticosterone levels were studied using HPLC in the blood plasma and tissues of rats after 1, 4, 7 and 10 injections of ethanol (3.5 g/kg, daily). Main parameters of binding of corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) were calculated using Scatchard's plots. It is shown that development of tolerance to the hypnotic action of ethanol in rats is accompanied with: 1) increased levels of corticosterone in the adrenal tissue, 2) gain of the adrenals' weight, 3) inhibition of the stressogenic elevation of corticosterone plasma levels, 4) decline in the binding capacity of plasma CBG, 5) reduced concentration of dexamethasone-sensitive steroid receptors in the liver. Negative correlations between the duration of ethanol-induced sleep and concentration of corticosterone were found: for adrenal tissue after 7 and for plasma after 10 injections of ethanol (24 hours after the injection).

[Effect of gamma-linolenic acid on microsomal oxidation in the rat liver following gamma-irradiation].

The antioxidant and radioprotector properties of gamma-linolenic acid isolated from the seeds of Borago officialis were studied on rats gamma-irradiated to a dose of 1 Gy. The irradiation caused an increase in the content of malonaldehyde in microsomal liver fraction and disturbed the metabolism of xenobiotics. The administration of gamma-linolenic acid in the form of a commercial drug Neoglandin (daily dose, 150 mg/kg, p.o.; over 1, 3, or 7 days after irradiation reduced the level of lipid peroxidation (for all treatment schedules), normalized the activity of NADPH-oxidase, NADH-oxidase, and NADPH-reductase, and increased the content of cytochromes P-450 and b5 as compared to bothirradiated and control animals.

[The compatibility of dentures made from precious metals and from corrosion-resistant steels with nitride coatings].

Measurements of electrode potentials of individual half-cells and galvanic currents between dentures made of gold, silver-palladium alloys, and stainless steel with titanium nitride coating, carried out in conditions of mechanic activation, have revealed that these parameters did not surpass the values characteristic of homogeneous elements. Therefore the aforesaid alloys are fairly well compatible in the oral cavity and may be combined in denture making.

[Mechanisms of the antilipemic action of niacin].

In tests conducted with albino rats the influence of nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, hydrocortisone and their combinations on a number of factor characterizing directly or indirectly the state of the lipid metabolism in the liver was investigated. It is suggested that hormonal mediation (preliminary stimulation of the suprarenals) may play a significant part in the realization of hypolipemic activity of niacin, its concrete mechanism being oxidation of the lipids, controlled by corticosteroids.

[The pancreas as a source of natural diabetogenic factor in alloxan diabetes].

The results of experimental studies bear evidence that the pancreas of healthy animals produces a humoral factor which differs from insulin and prevents the development of alloxan diabetes. The pancreas of diabetic animals loses the above-mentioned activity and produces into the blood plasma a natural diabetogenic factor which promotes the development of alloxan diabetes.

[The electrochemical indices of soldered dentures with titanium nitride-based multilayered coatings].

Development of an optimal design of multilayer dentures has involved studies of the effects of the material used to make the intermediate layer, its thickness and mode of application on the corrosive electrochemical behavior of orthodontic articles. Application of intermediate layers was found to reduce the magnitude of polarization current and improve the corrosion resistance of a soldered structure. The best effect was achieved with the design with a protective coating of Cr-Ti composition of stainless steel, applied by vacuum method, and galvanic Cr. The corrosion protecting characteristics of this sublayer were found to depend on the quality of the soldered junction: if it is defective, the protective effect is poor whatever the type of coating. The study has confirmed the necessity of protective coatings application to soldered half-finished articles and the efficacy of multilayer coatings with the surface layer of titanium nitride.

[On corticosteroid control of NAD splitting in rat liver].

Hydrocortisone increases the NAD-glycohydrolase activity in the liver of intact rats. Actinomycin D does not influence the stimulating effect of hydrocartisone with respect to the NADase activity of the liver. The degree of activation of NAD enzymic splitting with administration of 200 mg/kg of nicotinamide depends on the initial hormonal background: with hypercorticoidism it is higher and with hypocorticoidism it is lower than the level found in the intact animals which were given the same dose of the vitamin. An inverse correlation between the steroid-dependent shifts of the NADase activity and the content of NAD in the liver may evidence for their interdependence. A conclusion is drawan on the paramount importance of corticosteroid control of the nucleotide splitting in vivo for formation of NAD cellular pool.
