[Physical development of schoolchildren in the city of Moscow during the recent decade and a related assessment].

Data on the long-term and short-term monitoring over the growth and development of schoolchildren in the city of Moscow during the second half of the last century are presented (including around 10,000 persons). According to the purpose-oriented 40-year observations of the growing generation in Moscow, the accelerated physical development started in the 60-ies with its peak falling on the middle 70-ies; the elements of deceleration set on in the 80-ies and continued through the 90-ies. As for now, a deficit of the body weight, reduced width and span parameters and a decreased power abilities as well as shifts of the menarche time in girls towards an older age are typical of contemporary schoolchildren in Moscow. The detected trends are common regularities typical of children in all Russia's big cities.

[The physical development and adaptational potentials of schoolchildren].

During 1982-1991, a longitudinal study was made of 246 children from the beginning of going to school to leaving it. Specific features of formation of physical development and adaptative potentialities during their education were identified with regard to sexual dimorphism, constitutional features, morbidity and some sociohygienic factors.

[The health status dynamics of schoolchildren and the importance of biomedical factors in its development].

The dynamics in schoolchildren's health status varies in time, as the incidence of some chronic diseases decreases and that of the others increases. As a result, the health status of schoolchildren has deteriorated due to a reduction in the number of healthy children and an increase in the number of chronic patients in the past 30 years. Nervous, immune (allergic), and blood diseases have become frequent. Chronic ENT diseases have been encountered more infrequently due to the noticeable reduction in the incidence rates of tonsillitis and otitis. The positive trend is that schoolchildren have no rheumatism, infective allergic myocarditis, chronic pneumonia and diffuse glomerulonephritis and that the prevalence of locomotor disorders, renal and metabolic (obesity) diseases is low. During school time, the health status of children slightly improves due to the lower incidence rates of chronic diseases and the higher proportion of healthy children, but it has remained still worse than it was 30 years ago. The formation of chronic diseases has been found to occur in health group II children, who have morphological and functional changes, in 50% of cases from the first to the sixth forms and in 20% of cases from the seventh to the tenth forms. The present-day children are characterized by a combination of abnormalities and functional disturbances. This all require active and timely prophylactic measures to block chronization at the premorbid stage. Lifestyle (to keep the hygienic school regime, to do exercises and to go in for sports), sociohygienic conditions and genetic factors have profound effects on the health status.

[A decrease in twin births and factors involved in multiple pregnancy].

The object of this investigation were the causes of the decrease of the frequency of twin births during the last two decades. In Moscow this frequency decreased from 1,19% in 1956 to 0,7% in 1973. Among the births the proportion of first births was observed to increase, as well as the proportion of very young mothers. The effect of this process on the women characterized by a tendency to polyembryony was more conspicuous, than in the average on the population as a whole. During the last decades the process of acceleration of puberty was observed both in the mothers of twins and in all the women in general. However a somewhat later onset of first menstruations is characteristic of the women having a tendency to polyembryony-Hormonal changes taking place in the course of acceleration are apparently one of the causes of the decrease of the twin births frequency.
