[Antitumor immunity transfer by a factor isolated from lymphocytes of tumor bearer].

Low-molecular extracts (LMEs) of lymphocytes were obtained from spleen of noninbred rats using our experimental model of intraorganic growth of Guerin's carcinoma. They were intended to transfer immune reaction to tumor antigens in vitro. It was LMEs developed prior to tumor progression in spleen that showed immunospecific activity with respect to tumor cells. Also, they had marked antigen-independent immunopharmacological activity. Single intravenous injection of LMEs100 pg given on day 7 of tumor growth stimulated antitumor resistance in intact rats within a short time. It prevented tumor cells engrafting in 60% of tumors. A tumor-specific factor has been evolved capable of immune reaction transfer to tumor antigens in vitro thus preventing tumorigenesis in recipients in vivo.

[Immune response in non-inbred rats after implantation of Geren carcinoma into their spleens].

Formation of specific immune response of Geren's carcinoma (GC) versus its biological properties was studied in non-inbred rat spleen. GC growth was accompanied by mounting immune response to tumor-associated antigens (TAA) which was evaluated by macrophage adherence inhibition test. Increase in cell-mediated response to such antigens passed through stages determined by the peculiarities of GC growth in spleen tissues. Immune response to TAA was reported in half the animals as the cells were taking. Enhanced proliferative pool of tumor, aneuploidy and DNA index offset by the low level of apoptosis were characteristic of tumor progression stage. The combination of those factors served as a backdrop for immunologic tolerance development in all the animals. Immune response resurfaced as apoptosis intensified during generalized tumor growth when cell proliferation in the parenchyme declined.

[Correlated connection of endocrine function of thymus and other internal secretion glands at stages of developing uterine choriocarcinoma].

The mechanisms of endocrine and immune system disorders in normal and disturbed pregnancy as well as in chorionocarcinoma, hydatid mole, metastatic and non-metastatic chorionocarcinoma have been investigated. Relevant disorders were chiefly caused by the endocrine function of the thymus and gonadotropins from the trophoblast, which made a powerful impact on the periphery of hormonal and immunological homeostasis. Unlike normal pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease involved changes in the nature, direction and degree of correlations between endocrine formations, which in turn determined the pathogenetic pattern of the disease.

[Lymphocyte mechanoluminescence].

A unique installation and an original investigation method are described for studying mechanoluminescence of lymphocytes. The spectral content of mechanoluminescence of lymphocytes of human peripheral blood showed maxima of optical emission at 262, 291, 335 and 412 nm. Intraperitoneal administration of hydrocortisone in mice enhances thymocyte mechanoluminescence intensity after 2 and 3 days by 33 and 62%, resp. It is shown that Acridine orange, reacting with murine thymocytes and their nucleoids, affects intensity of their mechanoluminescence, depending on the value of concentration of the injected intercalator.

[Thymus endocrine function and the immune system indices of cancer patients after neutron and gamma therapy].

Patients with head and neck and locomotor system tumors received neutron therapy in the total doses of 4-8 and 12-14 Gy which was followed by a pronounced dose-dependent decrease in the serum thymus factor and total blood-lymphocyte levels. The latter changes were predominantly due to a decrease in the non-T-non-B cell concentration. Following the treatment, a rise in the level of circulating immune complexes and those of IgA and IgG was observed. Changes in the immune system proved less apparent in patients with locomotor system cancer who had been given 20 Gy of gamma-ray radiation.

[Status of the endocrine function of the thymus gland in the normal and complicated course of pregnancy].

A total of 84 women with normal pregnancy and those with threatened abortions were examined, as were 28 healthy nonpregnant women, to estimate the function of the thymus. The findings evidence enhancement of the endocrine function of the thymus in pregnancy, this function being assessed from the thymic serum factor titer. The function activation is related to pregnancy course and is more marked in threatened abortion. Before labor the thymic serum factor titers are the highest and they persist high after spontaneous delivery. The biological sense of thymic hormonal function activation in pregnancy is discussed, as are the possible mechanisms of this phenomenon.

[Intensive preoperative gamma teletherapy combined with endogenous interferon induction in the treatment of stomach cancer].

The authors analyze results of combined treatment of 72 patients using preoperative intensive gamma teletherapy. Increase of 4-year survival was observed only in patients showing no regional metastases and equalled 18.7%. The authors worked out a method of preoperative radiation treatment against the background of induction of endogenous interferon by curantyl. The course of radiation therapy was carried out in association with a 2-3 times increase of the interferon levels in the blood and was accompanied by a reduction of the immunodepressive effect of gamma teletherapy on the body.

[Effects of DL-difluoromethylornithine on the cell surface charge of Ehrlich ascitic cancer during different phases of the mitotic cycle].

Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO)-induced polyamide deficiency has been studied for its effect on the electrophoretic mobility of the Ehrlich ascitic cells in G1, S and G2 phases of the mitotic cycle. The DFMO treatment alters the pattern of the electrophoretic mobility distribution of Ehrlich ascite cells. The most profound changes of the electrophoretic mobility pattern are observed in G1-phase and at the S phase beginning. Exogenic polyamines decrease the electrophoretic mobility of cancer cells, which is accompanied by restoration of the initial pattern of the electrophoretic mobility distribution.

[Blood thymus hormone content in different types of neoplastic process and its changes as a result of chemotherapy and surgical removal of tumors].

Levels of thymic hormones in blood serum were found to decrease during the development of Guerin's carcinoma, methylcholanthrene- and DMBA-induced carcinogenesis, soft tissue sarcomas, mammary cancer, in children with tumors of the urinary-genital tract, that evidences for the suppression of the thymic endocrine function in neoplastic processes. A decrease in the level of substances, active in the test under study is not revealed in patients with different forms of leukemias. The tumour elimination normalizes the thymic endocrine function, while multiagent chemotherapy increases the insufficiency. The data obtained suggest the immunotherapy for malignant neoplasms with thymic hormones.

[Immunomodulating mechanism of the antitumor effect of asterin].

It was shown that asterin therapy performed on a model of spontaneous metastasis markedly changed the content of the thymus serum factor in mice and normalized its level. The inducing mechanism of the drug's antitumor action was realized both at the stage of the metastatic postinvasion phase and during its terminal period which was probably due to an increase in the influence of the thymus on the immune system and evident from an increase in the therapeutic action of the drug.

[Disorders of immune system function and their correction in melanomas with regional metastases].

Dysfunction of the thymus and the immune system in patients with melanoma was shown to be in direct correlation with tumor extent. The use of thymosin-like immunomodulator was followed by the most apparent recovery of the parameters studied in patients with localized melanoma resulting in improved clinical course of the disease. In cases of tumor spread into regional lymph nodes, immunologic disorders observed were identical to those registered prior to treatment. Tumor did not disseminate in patients retaining normal immune status.

[Changes in the electrophoretic mobility of thymus, spleen and lymph node cells in tumor-bearing mice during dynamic tumor growth].

Using the analytic microscope "Parmoquant-2" (GDR), histograms were obtained demonstrating electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of lymphoid cells of C57BL/6 mice in the course of growth of the Lewis carcinoma (3LL) and melanoma B16 administered under the skin of the femur. Changes in the average values of EPM of thymic, splenic and lymph nodal cells in the process of tumor growth appeared similar. It is shown that the medium thymocyte EMP is growing towards the terminal stage of tumor growth, at the expense of the decrease in the share of PNA+ cells. Splenic cell bimodal distribution according to EPM became, in the course of tumor growth in intact mice, unimodal with some insignificant decrease in the median EPM values. The median EPM of regional and distant lymph nodes in the process of tumor growth is of phase character. It is supposed that investigation of lymph node EPM could be used for studying tumor growth kinetics.

[Interrelations of disorders of the endocrine and immune systems of patients with malignant melanoma].

Investigations of endocrine and immune systems in melanoma patients gave evidence that such patients develop disorders of functions between thymus, on the one hand, and those of the pineal gland, pituitary, adrenal cortex and gonads, on the other, which are important in the pathogenesis of alterations in cell-mediated and humoral immune responses. The author recommends the administration to melanoma patients of either preparations of thymus itself or those with thymosin-like activity, as well as biologically active factors of the pineal gland which normalize metabolic changes in the body.
